Suggestions Buffalo NY
I will be in Buffalo for a few days in late September, staying in the downtown area near The Elmwood strip.
I need suggestions for some "must visit" sites and good restaurants.
Thanks in advance

Elmwood itself can be a fun neighborhood with its shops and bistros... in one direction is Canalside, a waterfront park with art, music, and water activities... it's near the Arena for concerts and sports, Miss Buffalo boat cruises, and an impressive Naval park...
In the other direction on Elmwood, is the Albright Knox art museum which houses world renowned contemporary art.
The architecture of Buffalo reflects it's wealth from the early 20th century with the crown jewel being the Frank Lloyd Wright restored Darwin Martin house... there are several tours that include dozens of mansions and business buildings...
Microbrewing is also on the rise with several upstart companies in the area...
The Buffalo Bills start their season in September, with the stadium just 20 minutes from Downtown.... there's also a lively theater scene with Broadway shows at the Sheas Buffalo and several smaller theaters...
There's a casino downtown if you're a gambler, and tons of clubs on The Chippewa strip,....
A good source of entertainment, food, and events can be found on the Buffalo News Gusto website...
Gotta go... be back with restaurants later...

I was going to recommend an open air bus tour of downtown that also goes to other places in the city, but they end in early September. You can take a architectural walking tour of downtown or Allentown - an awesome neighborhood:

Downtown has fabulous architecture. If you had more time I'd suggest walking around some other neighborhoods. Let us know if you'd like more information.
The Erie Basin Marina is connected to Canalside. Great places to hang out by the water.
If you like history, check out the Wilcox Mansion (Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site). The mansion itself is historical (something to do with the War of 1812 I think) and it's (obviously) where Roosevelt was inaugurated after McKinley was assassinated.
Here's a really good website to get more information on the must sees and neighborhoods.

There are soooo many new restaurants. Hopefully Garyt22 will come back or KathyK will chime in. My goal this fall and winter is to try out several of the new ones.
I've eaten at these, and they were all very good. You mention you are staying near Elmwood Avenue, so I'm taking a guess that you are staying in the Embassy Suites by Hilton in the Avant Bldg. If so, these are all walkable from there.
Osteria 166:

The 31 Club:

And the very expensive Chop House (I haven't eaten here - out of my league):

What type of food/restaurants are you interested in? You can get local food like Ted's hot dogs, wings, beef on weck to high end and everything in between.

I wonder what comment was removed? For nice water views try Templeton Landing in Erie Basin Marina. Or Liberty Hound at Canalside. Go to The Anchor Bar where wings were "invented."
It would help to know what types of restaurants you are interested in. Inexpensive vs expensive? Will you have a car? There are a LOT of restaurants here.
The Left Bank on Rhode Island St. Is very good. Hutch's. Tempo. Marble and Rye is new. I haven't been to M&B but have heard good things.
On another note...have you considered visiting Niagara Falls?

Toutant is southern inspired food featuring things like buttermilk fried chicken, southern style seafood, and all the fixens... good food in a nice setting... very popular...
Because Sheas is on the metrorail, your choices are many, bUT with show tickets, Touting is a good choice...

Bachus, Osteria 166, 31 Club are all good.
Others I've heard good things about and get good ratings (but haven't been to yet) include:
Marble and Rye, The Lodge, Hearth & Press, Encore, Toutant (as mentioned by Gary). Also, hearing good things about Frankie Primo's.
