I'm travelling from South of Washington DC to Toronto by car with my family in October. We don't want to drive the distance all in one day and have decided to stop over in a hotel on the way. We'd prefer it to be somewhere worth a visit in it's own right. I'd appreciated it if anyone had any suggestions. We'll be a party of 5 adults and one 9 year old child.

About 6 hours into your trip is Watkins Glen NY... there is a fantastic hike at the Watkins Glen State Park... Leaves should be in full bloom and you can park at the bottom of the Glen and ride a bus to the top and walk back to your car...
A great place to stay is www.watkinsglenharborhotel.com
forgot to mention that the rest of your trip will be about 5 hours...
Take the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls to save about 30 minutes at the border... plus you can have a quick peek at the Falls... have fun
It would depend on your route of course, but Corning, NY, looks like about half-way. Sounds like you would like to roll into someplace late afternoon/early evening, spend the night and maybe half of the next day and then continue on. If that's the case, the Corning Museum of Glass is a great way to spend some of that free time. It's really worthwhile. Open 9-5 every day, those 19 and under are free. Can't help with lodging, dining or other things to do there - maybe someone else can.

Seconding Watkins Glen. The Glen itself is a walk, not a hike but well worth doing for itelf as well as a way to work out the kinks.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Very useful
Check to see if Cooperstown, NY is on your route for baseball HOF
