In mid May our family of 6 will be staying near Times Square for a weekend. On Saturday morning we will want to go to the Battery Park area to ride the boat around Statue of Liberty and harbor area. If we take the subway that Saturday around 9 AM should it be very crowded as we have a child to keep up with? Certainly not like a weekday rush hour crowd! Also how long should the subway ride take from Times Sqaure to Battery Park? What subway number to get on and what exit to get off? HELP ON THE SUBWAY!
Subway Times Square to Battery Park for harobr ride on a Saturday in May.

The train won't be very crowded. Just grab the 1/9 if you don't want to switch trains. If you want to save time, take the 2/3, get off at Chambers, switch back to the local 1/9 across the platform, then continue down to South Ferry. It shouldn't take more than 20-30 min but it has been awhile since I actually did the route.
When you take the 1/9 to South Ferry, make sure you're on the first 5 cars of the train. Usually, these are any cars from the conductors booth forward.
The doors on the cars in the rear of the train do not open at South Ferry.
If you are staying close to 42nd St. go to the Times Square station, 42nd and 7th Avenue. Follow the signs directing people "DOWNTOWN". If an express train comes in (#2 or #3) take it to Chambers St. station (34th St, 14th St. Chambers St), Cross the platform and take the first train that arrives (#1 or #9 local) and get off at the last stop, South Ferry. Make sure you are in one of the first five cars. If you are closer to 50th Street take a #1 or #9 local to South Ferry. Don't bother to swich to an express at 42nd St since it will save five minutes at most. Trip will take around 25 minutes
