Does suburban sprawl threaten tourist areas in your part of the country? Does it threaten the living space of your home? In the Washington area, suburban sprawl threatens the battlefields of northern Virginia. Ravenous developers like Til Hazel would pave over the battlefields of northern Virginia if given the go ahead; he wants to build a bridge through some of the nicest bass streams in the area- the upper Potomac. The Chesapeake Bay is threatened with suburban sprawl as well with farms being carved up for development.

It does threaten the living space of everyone. Several years ago a developer wanted to put a housing development on several hundred acres near us and the entire town got up in arms and voted to buy the land for conservation. It was quite a battle but we won.
We're losing most of our fights in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. Two farms, a mile apart from each other on Kent Island near the Bay Bridge and Rt. 50, are being sliced up into about 2800 homes between the two. A super Wal-Mart is being planned just over the Bay Bridge to the right. It's funny. The conglomerates bring up the idea of jobs and cheap shopping. The super Walmart will just re-arrange jobs. The Acme food store will close if the Walmart opens as might the KMart. Many those laid off by Acme and KMart can work for lower pay at Walmart. The county already is littered with empty strip shopping centers. If Acme and Kmart go under, we'll have more empty, forlorn shopping strip malls. A problem in our county is that the real estate lobby rules the county commissioners. Both Democrats were heavily funded by the lobby; the Republican is a dunce. A national problem is that too many people think of themselves as consumers and shoppers rather than citizens, neighbors and families.
