I would check into a lot of the websites Sturgis has. Also the Black Hills is beautiful to tour on a motorbike. It gets very hot there during the rally so make sure you have plenty of drinks. The food is plentiful downtown and it's really good too. We aren't bikers, but we go there just to see things, and it's fun. We stay in Deadwood and gamble and walk around at night. Be sure to take a bike ride to Devils Tower. I think they have organized bike activities, check out on the website.
And wear black. Any biker that wears anything else doesn't fit in, period. There is something there for everyone (adults), so have a good time and enjoy yourselves!
You are lucky, how did you get a room so fast? Where, may I ask??? During the week it's impossible to get a place to stay there!
Thank you for the reply, Lora. We are staying at Custer State Park, at the Silvin Lake Resort. Friends of ours have stayed there and really like it. It is about 60 miles from Sturgis. We were lucky to get a reservation. Thank you for the tips.
We always camped when we were there. The food is very good. No need to worry about food from the vendors. There is a small street place called Porky's that serves really outstanding BBQ turkey and pork. Easy to find, just off the main drag.
We didn't ever worry about wearing black either other than our old leathers. But then we have been riding for 25 years and don't care anymore. It can get so hot there that black can be unbearable. You will see lots of older riders wearing shirts that are not black.
Deadwood is fun. Go up to the old cemetary. Are you riding in or trailering in?
We always ride and come from Montana. Lots of interesting little bars to stop at, Alsada is one. From Alsada (sp?) to Sturgis, there are some lovely rides.
Have fun. I wish I was going this year.
Thank you, traveller for your input. We are trailering the bike out. We will look for the BBQ place, sounds good! We heard there are lots of scenic rides in the area. We appreciate your tips.
Custer State Park is just beautiful. I am glad you are staying there. You can have some nice quiet moments when you want to get away from it all.
have fun and be sure to report back here when you get back, ok? I'm going to be in Rapid City a lot this fall and I love that part of the country during that time of the year.
Thanks Lora, I will report back. I think we will enjoy the trip a lot. Mary
Hi Lora and all who helped me with ideas for our Sturgis trip. We had a great time there. We stayed at Custer State Park at Sylvan Lake. It is a beautiful area and touring on the bike was great. We did the wildlife loop road, saw Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Jewel Cave and the Badlands. We went to downtown Sturgis twice, ate, shopped, people watched. It was really crowded on our second visit and it took us over an hour to ride out of town. We met a lot of very nice people and we hope to return next year. Thank you for all your input. Mary
