Straight down 45 from DFW to Galveston... anything we just can't miss?
My boyfriend and I are driving 45 from DFW to Galveston. We love to explore, but don't have enough time to get too far off of the path. Any suggestions of any kind? We are adventurous! Example... We hit up the National Museum of Funeral History on our last trip. It was awesome!

Since you are driving through Huntsville, home of the Huntsville State Prison, perhaps you might want to visit the Texas Prison Museum. I have never been there, but I figure anyone who has visited the National Museum of Funeral History would appreciate the Texas Prison Museum!

They make world famous Collin Street fruitcakes in Corsicana and have a bake shop to buy what they make. They have other bakery items other than fruitcake--that's just what they are famous for.
I'm from NE Texas and we just get to Galveston as fast as possible. So many things to see and do there or just more time to play/relax.

Personally, I would skip the entire route. Take 35S to Hwy 6 (Just outside Waco) to 290 and head into Houston that way. Once you get to Hwy. 290, you can backtrack a little West and go to Brenham and visit The LIttle Creamery in Brenham where they make Blue Bell Ice Cream!
I-45 is one of the most awful, boring drives in Texas.

I like Jill's recommendation. While I-35 is nothing special either, at least you get off the interstate at Waco and can see some authentic small Texas towns on Hwy 6. This route is a bit longer than I-45, but it's also more scenic.
For places to explore, there are a couple of places in Waco that you might enjoy--the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame which is right off I-35 and the Dr. Pepper Museum which is only about 5 blocks from I-35. And if you don't mind that detour to Brenham, I definitely recommend the stop at the Blue Bell factory for a tour and a taste of their ice cream. If you visit all 3 of these places, you will have experienced 3 iconic aspects of Texas!
