stormygirl tours the south!
Well it all started with a friend's wedding in Alabama. Tuscaloosa to be exact. Stayed at the 4 Points Sheraton with the rest of the wedding guests. Things are different in Bama. I won't be heading back soon but I can say that 2 things stick in my head.... amazing barbeque at Dreamland. Ribs, sauce and white bread. That's it, that's all they serve and it was GOOD! These ribs are done wet and spicy. The other thing was finding a small gem of a restaurant called the Globe just on the otherside of the river from Tuscaloosa, in Northport. Really nice Italian/French inspired cuisine and amazing steaks! And a good wine list! Can you believe that this will be our big splurge restaurant in 10 days?
Wave goodbye to Bama, we drive thru Mississippi on our way to Memphis. We stop in Columbus MS to glance at Tennessee Williams birthplace then on to Tupelo to see Elvis Presley's birthplace (theme of the day!). We actually found both by accident.
On to Memphis. Stayed at the Mariott for $50 a night thru Priceline (I'm a fantatic!). The hotel and the convention center across the street are going thru some expansion. The trolley runs right in front and although we were warned that sometimes this end of downtown can be seedy we saw none of that. Never had any problems and really enjoyed our stay.
The first day we went to the Civil Rights Museum which is so moving! I think this is one of the best museums I have been to. After a quick lunch at Cafe 61 (which I recommend for drinks only. The food is sub par and the service is not good) we went to the Pyramid where there was an exhibit just opened, Masters of Florence. Everything was owned and about the Medici's. Amazing exhibit if you are in Memphis I highly recommend!!!
Dinner that night at Automatic Slims. This is an awesome restaurant. Definatly eat here! yum!! After dinner my husband took me dancing at BB Kings Blues Bar. We had such a good time.
Next day we were off to Graceland and then caught a Redbirds afternoon game. What a fantastic park! And who doesn't like BBQ nachos?
Drinks at Samovar, dinner at Rendezvous BBQ that night and then back down to Beale st to the Rum Boogie Cafe to catch a band. We rented a horse and carriage to take us back to the hotel, very fun.
Spent our last afternoon at Mud Island. This was just ok for me but my husband liked it and so would kids. One last lunch in town at Run Boogie Cafe so I could have deep fried pickles... YUM! Then off to drive to Arkansas! ..........

Hey stormygirl - I was in Memphis last week and went to an afternoon Redbirds game on Wednesday. Great game, great park. I was just telling my lunch crowd about those killer barbeque nachos. Yummy!!!

bennnie, what a great park that is! We just loved it. And what about the 'redhots'? Too funny!!
So off to Arkansas to visit the inlaws. the drive up to the north part is boring to say the least. Finally we arrive in the land of Walmart, Tyson and FedEx.
We went on a really great canoe trip on the Buffalo National River. This is a great park/river. Tons of turtles, blue herons, turkey vultures, etc. We just spent a morning but you can do overnight trips too.
The next day we went to Eureka Springs. Very cute touristy town built into the hills. Lots of cute shops and places to eat. Not really our thing but a good diversion. That night we went to Branson MO for dinner and a show. We are use to Vegas shows so we felt like we were at someones high school drama theater but we had a good time anytime. Branson is a strange place.
Finally flew out of the smallest airport sitting in the middle of a cow field in Bentonville.
Home sweet home!!

stormygirl,
We're going to the Buffalo National River area in July and are still making our plans. What part of the river were you on/what town were you close to? Do you have any tips on canoe rental, places to eat, etc?
Thanks!

Talked to my FIL today and this is the info he gave me:
"Wild Bill's" canoe outfitters, south of Yellville, Arkansas, on Highway 14. In July it will be quite hot, and the river level will be low, but that lower portion of the Buffalo will still be fine. There is a good outfitter in Gilbert too. Check www.nps.gov/buff for the latest information, real time river levels, phone numbers for outfitters (a reservation for a weekend might be needed), and lots more.
