Stoppin between Boston and Outer Banks

We will be traveling from Boston to the Outer Banks in late July. Last year we sropped for 2 days in Chincoteague and saw the horses and used the beach. This year we would like to stop somewhere different to split up our trip. Thinking of Virgina beach or Ocean City, MD. ....realizing both of these locations are very commercial and expensive. Any other suggestions along the coast where we would have beachfront hotels/motels - great beach - and some restaurants? Also any suggestions for speciif hotels/motels? Thanks.

I like Virginia Beach but it's awful close to the Outer Banks. How about Cape May NJ?

Seeing as your going to be on the beach down in NC, why dont u stop along the beautiful Chesepeake Bay in one of the quiet lil towns on Eastern shore Maryland. Stay in a B&B and enjoy good seafood. Heck, stop by Annapolis - nice waterfront, affordable things to do and great seafood and MD crabs. www.hometownannapolis.com

I agree w/ the Chesapeake Bay idea. Depends on time and $, but plenty along Eastern Shore and then you could take the tunnel down towards Va., Beach and Outer Banks. Just back from a week in Sanderling....fabulous. ZTry the Blue Point Grille for a meal if you get a chance and are so inclined. A bit pricey, but great dinerlike setting with first class food in Duck.. Another thought might be Charlottesville, but pretty far south for a mid-way stop.
Not great beaches on Eastern Shore, but great food and some very nice places to stay like Tides Inn.

How about a drive to Crisfeld MD, which bills itself as the Crab Capital of the World? Maybe take a boat over to Tangier Island for the day, where it's so isolated out there in the Chesapeake that their accent still sounds a little "Elizabethian"?
