Stopover recommendation??

Our family of four will be visiting in the Charlottesville,Va area prior to continuing to Charleston,SC.(August 2009)
We thought it might be easier to stop overnight somewhere in North Carolina, midway between the two destinations.

Any interesting suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!!

It is probably around 8 hours depending on I95 traffic. The only place I would suggest (& it is a tad off of I95) would be Wilmington, NC. I'd likely just drive straight through though.

Maybe Raleigh or Durham or even Chapel Hill. If Raleigh, you can get to I-95 easy and shoot down to Charleston which is about 5 hours away. I do think Wimington is about 2 hours each way off the track (4 hours total).

Hwy 17 out of wilmington to Charleston would take almost a day. JMHO

From I-95 you can take I-40 straight into Wilmington. From Wilmington back to I-95 you'd take 74/76 which I believe is all 4-lane now over to Florence. By my calculations it would be 111 miles farther, total, so less than an hour for each travel day.

Subway And San have it wrong about Route 17 from Wilmington to Charleston. It is a good road 4 lane highway, congested through Myrtle beach but would be a bout 4 hours total--an hour to MB and about 2.5-3 to Charleston.
Going back to I95 would be true madness!!
I would be for driving through also.
But for a nice place to stay a bit closer to Charleston, think about the Litchfield area--Litchfield Inn, or the hotel at the Litchfield Resort and Golf club.
You can also enjoy a dinner at the best selection of seafood on the coast in Murrell's Inlet, just north. And if you arrive in time, visit Brookgreen Gardens, just across the road.
You will need reservations at that time of year for just an overnight. There is also a Hampton Inn at Litchfield, just across the road from the entrance to Litchfield by the Sea.

I didn't pooh-pooh 17 but there are also a lot of random lights up & down through there (as well as the afore-mentioned MB issues).
