Trip Ideas
Where's the list? No link?
We are creating our own.
OK then, although I think aduchamp should start since his/her list of places to eat is always so great, but I'll put in my 2 cents:
Hot dog from Grey's Papaya
Pastrami sandwich at Katz'
(And some dear departed - blintzes at Ratner's, cheesecake at Lindy's)
I put in one of my favorites
Here's two another
Clinton Street Bakery scones and biscuits
You took Clinton St from me Aduchamp
I'll go with Lombardi's for pizza
http://www.firstpizza.com/newyork.html
Andrew-
I will take it back

Tangerine beef from Shanghai Cafe, Mott Street
Pignoli cookies from Veniero's, East Village
..short ribs from Craft
Foie gras brulee from Jean Georges
ekscrunchy - last week I MADE a Bo SSam (which I agree with you, is a truly GREAT dish). David Chang was on Martha Stewart and gave the recipe, which you can see on her site. It is SOOOO easy - I really recommend trying it. I went up to the Korean supermarket Han Ah Reum on 32nd Street and bought lots of kimchee, pickles, hijiki and bbq tofu, along with some lettuce for wraps - we had a feast. It was almost as good as Momofuku - and about $170 cheaper!
Ray's Pizza (they're everywhere)
a reuben on a knish (or a regular one on rye) at Carnegie Deli (and part of the fun is watching the tourists gasp when the gargantuan portions are served)
FYI, when we order a sandwich at Carnegie Deli we pay for extra bread and split the sandwich ... AND STILL LEAVE OVER SOME OF THE MEAT
Cherry streudel from Poseidon Bakery
Scottish salmon from Zabars
Marinated bocconcini from Zabars
Stilton and sauternes fondue with sliced green apple at Artisianal.
And -- I haven't been there in ages -- but at one time the linguini and white clam sauce at Umberto's was about as good as you can get.
MP: Thanks for that tip. I will make a plan to do a bo ssam someday soon.
I went with out-of-town friends to Carnegie Deli last week. I ordered corned beef sandwich. I could eat only about a quarter of it, so got a stack of extra rye bread, put the bread in freezer, and have had a tiny sandwich every day for almost an entire week from the remaining 3/4 of leftover meat! All from one sandwich.
Also bought a quart of their chicken stock (ridiculous price) and froze that in ice cube trays.
Here are 2 more great things to eat:
Wonton (chicken) noodle soup, Viet style, from New Chiu Chow at 111 Mott Street (bet. Canal and Hester) About $3.
Roast pork (boneless) from Big WingWong on Mott Street (there are a few Wing Wongs; I go to the one north of Canal at 102 Mott; specialty is Cantonese roast meats)
calamari at Blue Ribbon
frozen custard at Shake Shack
the sauteed zucchini with pecorino at Red Cat
We like the one called Big Wong on Mott. (They do not have a wing.) Their spicy chow fun is wonderful.
Chocolate donut, cinnamon bun-Donut Plant
Chopped live-2nd Ave Deli, Russ & Daughter
Real bialys-Kossars, try the wheels as well
Chorizos-Despana
Walnut Sour Cream Apple Pie-Little Pie Company
Cacio e Pepe at the restauranrt called Cacio e Pepe
>>Clinton Street Bakery scones and biscuits<<
Can I make the caveat, only during the week, they serve them day old and microwaved on the weekends during the brunch crush.
added:
Balthazar olive bread and baguettes *pre-order and pick up
Falai cabbage bread
Micheladas, sangritas, and habenero margaritas @ Barrio Chino
Yellow tofu @ Village Mingala
Carnitas @ Cabrito (or so my meat eating cohorts say), I like the homemade corn tortillas
Membership at Milk & Honey, Gimblets or Monkey's Glands are noteworthy cocktails
Il Laboratorio gelato
2nd on Kossars bialys
Pastrami smoked salmon from Russ & Daughter's - goes well on the bialy with mustard
Smoked mozzarella from Dipaolo's
Any coffee from Dean and Deluca.
Any food in NYC.
Affogato at 'inoteca
Ice cream at Blue Marble
Pork butt at Momofuku Ssam
Steak frites at Zucco: Le French Diner
Mud coffee
Coppa at Lupa
Hot chocolate at Jacques Torres
Grilled chicken sandwich with mozzarella on challah with some sort of wheat beer on a Saturday afternoon at Grey Dog
I agree with Cherrybomb with Laboratorio Del Gelato
Adu: Is that the Wong south of Canal, or north? I am not sure if the one north of Canal is a Wing Wong or just a Wong. I would like to try the spicy chow fun sometime soon. I am always looking for new dishes to try in that area.
Babka from Russ and Daughters..not sure where this is made, though.
Gruyere pretzel bread at Almondine (Dumbo)
Tamarind duck at Lily Thai (Wilbrg)
Spicy sausage with rice dumplings at Momofuku Ssam
Kimchi consomme with pork belly at Momofuku Ko
Hickory burger at Houston's (I know, I know...it's a national chain, but I greedily stand by my selection. It's that good.)
Roasted wild mushrooms at Craftbar
Sage leaves stuffed with lamb sausage at Terroir Wine Bar
Porky soup dumplings at Joe's Shanghai
Bar snacks (canelle, ricotta meatballs) at Bar Stuzzichini
Any oysters at Grand Central Oyster Bar
South Indian masala dosas at Saravannas
Finally...
The caramelized pork chops at Nha Trang -- simply incredible and it's hard to spend more than $15pp there.
That is the Big WOng's south of Canal.
Have you had the soup noodles at Joe's Shanghai?
Adu: Thanks. I've not been to that Wong.
The soup noodles, no. I've had the soup dumplings there. But I like Shanghai Cafe better for Shanghai food. Even better is Shanghai Tide in Flushing. Do you like to try interesting "authentic" Chinese places?
My favorite bagel is the everything. When I was in the city for work I was fortunate enough to stay where there is an ess a bagel right across the street.
I generally don't like to get up any earlier than I have to (yes I am lazy!), but I got up early and got my everything bagel with butter before meeting my friend to walk to the office. I ate half on the way and it was all I could do to keep from breaking the rest of it out during the meeting!
yum yum yum...
this thread is making me hungry! Will definitely save for future reference.
Pizza from Grimaldi's
Tres Leche donut and Coconut creme donut from Donut Plant
Burger from Shake Shack
Do you see all that you received... there is no way for you to look at all these great places and pick a place. Go out and walk around and find a great place - too many to choose from.. however, Grimaldi's and Shake Shack always have lines to get in... there are so many great places to eat and no waiting on a line.
Homemade potato chips from Porters (8th and 23rd)
Tomato Basil soup, Cafeteria (7th at 17th)
ekscrunchy
Yes, please tell me some of your favorites.
Austin
What type of restaurant is Porter's?
Have you been to Schaffer City?
Adu: Some of the ones I liked recently (most of these you know already, I am sure):
Sripraphai
Zabb Thai (Woodside)
Nusara Thai (Elmhurst)
Fu Run (NW Chinese;Flushing) (a current favorite)
Shanghai Tide (Flushing)
Little Pepper (Flushing)
I also had a great meal at shanghai Cafe on Mott recently.
Are you interested in a group dinner?
ekscrunchy: I would be, if I may be so bold to invite myself.
Yes, we would.
One of my closest friends is Chinese and she takes us to Jade Asian in Flushing. We like Jing Fong in Manhattan but it is a zoo on weekends.
I have a few friends that will probably be interesting in doing a group dinner. I will see them tomorrow night and discuss...it would be fun!!
So where can I get a seeded roll and coffee like I used to get at Chock Full O Nuts?
Audchamp, we happened upon Porters last summer, as it was near the apartment we were renting in Chelsea. I liked their open patio and wine, and the bartender was so interesting, from Czech Republic. We decided to stop there again. Friends had dinner there last year and really liked it. They try really hard to please. I'll go back again for sure.
Meatballs at Apizz
Bucatini Amatriciana at Lupa

Babka - Europan - Bway (78-77)
Black Kale Salad - Il Buco - NoHo

Grilled corn, red beans and yellow rice -Cafe Habana

It would be nice. There are people I could ask as well.

Mutton chop at Keens Steakhouse
on a cold rainy February day, a cup of the hot chocolate of the day at City Bakery
with apologies to sf7307 and andrew8, the best hot dogs are at Nathan's (I know this is a running feud among dog lovers) and the best pizza is at Stromboli on 14th and University Place.
Must agree with mp that anything at Tabla is fantastic.
Some other:
Short ribs at Craft
Black bread with raisins from Zabars
Anything from Murray's Cheese in Grand Central Market
How did I forget Murray's on my list?? I frequent the one in the West Village on Bleeker. So good. I like Jasper Hill Constant Bliss. The name says it all.
There is a lemon ricotta cheesecake at Murray's, at least at the one Bleecker, that will turn into a street addict. They keep it on top on the counter in a cake container.
I like the one in Grand Central, because there are so many other amazing food stalls there. It's as close to being in Harrod's food hall as I think you can get in NYC!
Good point askenn--I'm not at Grand Central often but maybe I need to make a special trip.
Earmarking for future trip!
Katie, you should. Oh the food: meats seafood, bakery. You could spend a morning and gain 10 pounds just looking!
I haven't been back to NYC in a year and now I am sooooo ready to go.
Aduchamp~~ regarding your opionion of best things to do for free in NYC, previous post, you posted watching the elephants....when does the circus come to town?
Gypsy-
I think it is soon within the next few weeks. Usually it at is at midnight just before the circus starts at the Garden. The elephants exit from the midtown tunnel at 34th Street.
While in the Lower East Side, treat yourself to a sandwich and matzah ball soup at Katz's Deli. Go for Pastrami for a real delight. The food and the experience will never be forgotten! After the meal, stroll down to Economy Candy and get your favorite sweets from today and days gone by. Button candy and bottlecaps, anyone?
I pine for a blintz from the dear departed Ratner's on the Lower East Side.
I like Murray's on Bleeker too.
Is Grom gelato still on the corner? I know the one by Zabar's is gone. My favorite is the Gianduia gelato.
Grom is still on the corner; I don't know why I haven't gone yet---I love gelato.
Oh Katie, you must try it. I won't be there until April and I'm dreaming of it. I was so disappointed when I went back to the one by Zabar's and it was a phone store. But the one on Bleeker is nicer anyway.
-Huarache con chorizo (it's like a Mexican savory pancake with chorizo and tomatillo salsa on top) from El Paso Taqueria (East Harlem--don't be scared, the 104 and Lexington location is right on the 6 train 103rd street stop, there's also an Upper East side location but I can't vouch for that one)
-Anything at Chikalicious (dessert bar in the East Village)
-Burger with everything at the National Underground (East Village)--this place is also great for live music (free) upstairs.
-Almond cookie ice cream from Chinatown Ice Cream Factory (Chinatown)--preferably on the first day of spring, when you've walked from SoHo so you earned it.
-Masala dosa from Hampton Chutney Co. (SoHo and Upper West Side)
-Fresh donuts from Back 40 (East Village)
-Sweet and Salty cupcake from Baked (Red Hook)--I have been a foot soldier in the cupcake wars and this is the best cupcake I've ever eaten.
Hmm, it seems I eat a lot of sweets
-rice flaked halibut in watermelon curry and a Kachumber cooler cocktail at Tabla
-brussel sprouts a la plancha, lambs tongue salad at casa mono
-mint love letters at babbo
-lasagna or something wood fired from peasant
-oxtail katiev and num pang sandwiches from Kampuchea
-dosas at saravannas
-cupcakes from Crumbs
-agree with everything MP says!
Beard Papa's cream puffs
lemongrass frog legs from Xe Lua
katie - try extra noir at Grom - it's great and even better in Firenze!
That's cioccolato extra noir.
sorry to all the grom fans, but i think it's overrated. i walked by the lines for the one in UWS so many times, i felt like i needed to try it, and maybe my expectations were high because of that, but i was disappointed.
A few suggestions in here: http://www.theage.com.au/travel/new-york-on-the-cheap-20090311-8up4.html?page=-1
And you can get Beard Papa all over, it's a big chain - in fact, there are far fewer of them in NY than there are in California.
So what?
So, I find it hard to believe that chain food is one of the best 100 things to eat in NYC. But if you think it is, ok.
How does something's availability in California affect how it tastes in NYC?
A slice of Strawberry cake from Lady m Bakery
A hot dog from a street vendor
Spaghetti and meatballs from Carmine's on Broadway
The bourbon street bread pudding at B. Smith's restaurant
A White Castle hamburger
The fries at Steak Frites.
