Stellarossa: Anyone been to Chadron, Nebraska?

Jump to last reply

I hear there is a museum of the fur trade in Chadron and, by going there, will mean I can tick Nebraska off the list if 48. It is feasible to drive from Rapid City to Chadron and back to Rapid City in one day, staying a couple of hours in Chadron? Anyone been to the museum?

thanks

    Tony,

I live in western Nebraska, south of Chadron about 1 1/2 hours (which is no distance at all out here). I'm not familiar with the museum you're referring to but have you checked out Ft. Robinson, which is near Chadron? It's an actual preserved army outpost from the late 1800's with an amazing array of museum artifacts and existing buildings. Even a neat restaurant in the old hotel. Our family loves camping up there in the summer--check it out on the web. Nebraska deserves better than a two hour check-it-off-your-list visit! Email me for more info. By the way, my area of the world has the Oregon Trail, Scottsbluff National Monument and Chimney Rock. We love visitors!

    Tony,

This is a late response to your post, but you didn't indicate when your trip was. I am assuming summer as the Museum of the Fur Trade does not open for regular hours unitl Memorial Day. I am an amateur photographer from St. Louis and have been going to the Nebraska panhandle each of the last few years. My top recommendations for the area would be:

Toadstool Park, 25 miles or so NW of Crawford. It is a wonderful badlands-style landscape with incredible rock formations.

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is a 1/2 hour south of Harrison, and has some wonderful short easy trails that lead through the open plains. Incredible wide-open treeless plains, big sky landscape. The visitor center center has some great artifacts from the time when Chief Red Cloud and his Oglala Sioux were regular visitors to the area in the late 1800s.

Sioux Sundries in Harrison is an off the beaten path store on main street in Harrison with 3 or 4 booths in the back. Local ranchers gather in the morning/afternoon for rolls and coffee. It's claim to fame is the Coffee burger, a 28 oz. cheeseburger (2-14oz patties). Decades ago, a local rancher, Mr. Coffee, had them make up special for him - legend has it he could polish the thing off. My son and I split one on our last trip after a morning of hiking at Agate Fossil Beds and no breakfast - could only handle 1/2 of it.

Ft. Robinson State Park, as the previous poster implies is a great place to stay, teriffic views of the Crazy Horse Buttes. Nice little wildlife drive. Jeep tours into the back country. Nice golf course. Great history.

Frontier Saloon in Crawford. Sign over door says, "Cowboys scrape sh** from boots before entering". A lively place. The adjacent Family Restaurant has really good food and nice local atmosphere.

There really is much more...Western Nebraska and the Sandhill so central Nebraska are worth several days exploration.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any further questions.

    Daryl
