Steakhouse Suggestion in Boston Please

I'll be driving to Boston this Monday to buy my son his.first official legal drink! I'd like to do that in conjunction with a steak dinner and am looking for a suggestion of where to go.

The point of this trip is all about the drink, not the steak, so I'm not looking for something like Ruth Chris or Morton's, but obviously not a Hoss's either. More a place that jeans would be ok (although I'm not adverse to asking him to wear khakis if need be) I'll be picking him up at Boston University and after a 7 hour drive, am not looking for hours more driving.

I bought my first two sons drinks on their 21st. Birthdays so have to uphold the tradition! Thank for any suggestions!

(I hate it when people do this but I am going to anyway). I know you said steakhouse - which are almost exclusively chains in Boston - but then you said it is not about the steak but the drink.

I think you should consider going to the Liberty Hotel - one of their bars and/or restaurants. He will think this is the coolest thing in the world. The room prices are ridiculous and food not cheap, but it is the old Charles Street Jail turned into a hotel and series of bars and a couple of restaurants as well. They have kept most of the interior - some of the bar alcoves are made up of stone walls from the original cells, complete with some metal bars. You can see the old catwalk. When we bring guests they have been in awe of the place. It is the type of place that as a student it is unlikely he would ever go, but will tell his friends about for weeks.

Accessible on MBTA or parking at the Mass Eye and Ear lot for a reasonable price (yes, you are allowed to park there as a non-patient).

He should wear khakis and a shirt with a collar - but tie and jacket not necessary.

Eastern standard. The steak frites there is really good, and the cocktail program is famous. Or you can take him next door to the Hawthorne for a pre dinner drink. Plus it's very convenient to BU, you can probably walk, take the green line, or just take advantage of the valet parking.

If you want a more serious steak, you could go to Grill 23. I love the food there. But it's a little less casual since it's full of businessmen. And it's very loud.

The last time I asked for a restaurant suggestion (that one was for brunch) we ended up at Eastern Standard and it was perfect for what we wanted. That would certainly be the easy option. Good to know they have good steak frites. We would be very happy with that.

The other two sound like great ideas too and I will check them out for fun. Might just end up at one of them.

It really isn't about the steak, but he loves steak and I'd like him to be able to order one if he so chooses. It is his birthday after all.

It will be an expensive drink...14 hours of driving and a hotel for Monday night for me!

But DS3 is worth it!

I agree with china_cat about Eastern Standard and the Hawthorne. Both are well-known for their cocktails and convenient to BU.

My other suggestion, if you really want a steak house, is to go to Bogie's Place inside J.M. Curley's downtown on Temple Place. Not far from Park St. Station. It's small, reminiscent of a an old-time restaurant, and has good cocktails.

The best steakhouse is probably Grill 23. Loud and busy, but ate there a couple weeks ago and the food was excellent. I think they technically ask for no jeans, but dark jeans and a nice button down is perfectly fine (I wore jeans with a blazer).

Del Friscos is also good, but I think Grill 23 better. Boston Chops is a more casual option and pretty good.

Both of the above are expensive. Grill 23 does have good cocktails, though the "menu" is limited if you don't know what you want.

I agree with the JM Curley recommendation too. One of my favorites. Very good cocktails and excellent casual food.

I was disappointed in the food, service, and the drink on my last trip to Eastern Standard, plus I don't think steak frites really qualifies as steak to a steak fan. I think they might need a shakeup. IIRC, they recently lost their chef to the upcoming Cafe ArtScience.

For hotels I would recommend you to check roomrocker.com, it shows you rates from all the websites and allows you to book directly so you won't have to pay commission!

Time to check out the above. Just in case anyone who has responded is on Fodors now, do any of the steakhouses mentioned above have their own parking? How far are they from BU?

Boston Chops, Grill 23, and Del Friscos all have valet. I don't think JM Curley has parking. Grill 23 is closest to BU (within a couple miles). The others are within five miles and 15 minutes or so, barring crazy traffic.

Thanks travelgourmet - Grill 23 is looking like good for many reasons.

I'm going to check out Del Friscos next.

JM Curley looks like their specialty is burgers so I decided against that one for the time being, especially since there is no parking.

My son isn't into any fancy drinks - I'm doing this trip to be the one to buy him his first legal drink...even if it's only a beer.

That Liberty Hotel certainly looks incredible, and I want to go there! However, it might be better to wait until my husband is there with me/us. He would be so sad if I were to go to such a cool place without him! Maybe a good place for a graduation dinner! I wonder if this is the type of place that might book up for an event like that.

Are Morton's and Ruth Chris along the same price range as Grill 23 or Boston Chops? I always think of them as being the most expensive, but these others are too. Maybe Ruth Chris and Morton's are on another price level altogether! Just curious. I actually never thought Ruth Chris was worth the money that was paid (not by me so that explains why I don't remember the prices there). I tried to look them up online, but they don't list the prices.

While searching for del Friscos, I also came across Fogo de Chao Brazilian steakhouse. Have any of you gone there? I think that it sounds fun, if I understand how it all works.

Just want to clarify that I mentioned Bogie's Place which is part of JM Curley's but completely different. It is a steak house.

Mooo is another steakhouse option. It's in the XV Beacon Hotel. Pricey but it isn't a chain.

I'd park the car at BU and hop on the subway to get to the restaurant unless you decide on the Seaport area. Then you can valet. Another new steakhouse which is well-reviewed is Boston Chops in the South End. It might be the best local (i.e. non-conventioneer) choice. I think it has valet parking.

I've never been to that all-you-can-eat Brazilian restaurant.

cw - thanks for the clarification - you were right, I had missed it.

They don't make reservations on Sundays so I would have to try to make one and wait until after 4 to see if we would get in. I think I'll save that for another time too, but it does sounds good.

I think we will go to Grill 23. Not too far from BU and the steaks sound good.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone.

Not sure, exactly, but they wouldn't be that different. Maybe a tiny bit cheaper, but it all depends what you order.

I've been to Fogo de Chao-down a few times. It is what it is, which is a place to see how much you can eat. The food is okay. It won't break boundaries, but it isn't bad. A little salty on the meats maybe. Not nearly as good as Grill 23, but tasty and cheaper. And if your son has a big appetite...

Another vote for Grill 23. Great steak and excellent service.

I also like Abe and Louie's and they also have valet parking.

It's win-win between Grill 23 and Eastern Standard. Happy birthday!

FWIW, since I see some folks talking about chains, Grill 23 is not a chain.
