OMG, gracieb. That's horrible. We'll be in Yellowstone in Sept, but you won't catch me on the wrong side of ANYTHING. That's why those rails, walls, etc, are there!

The article said her 2 children were there, too. What horror for those poor kids to have to see that!

Hi gracieb, that is a horrible story. I can only imagine the trauma her children are husband are going through. Very sad indeed. Sometimes travellers get carried away without thinking of the reason for signs, barriers etc (it happens on the coastline of our N CA coastline).

Ohmygod! We just returned from YNP, and I vividly recall those overlooks and all the warning signs!

Why, oh why, do some people ignore warnings?

Sad.

Please, if you go to YNP, STAY ON THE INSIDE of ANY of those railings.

Be very careful NOT to try to walk around on steaming ground (!) outside of the walkways provided, either! People have been severely scalded when they stepped through the crust into boiling water!

This woman was from my town! It's been all over my local news (and national now) for days. That poor family! It sounds like she was a very well-liked person, and to have her husband & kids watch this is just awful. What a horrible way to remember your vacation.

Every year, people die in our national parks. Every year, the folks who work at the parks say "This isn't Disneyland; this is real nature." But folks don't always pay attention. So sad.

In September 1993, my first visit to the Grand Canyon, three people fell off the rim to their death. A few years ago on another visit I purchased a book called Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon by Michael P. Ghiglieri and Thomas M. Myers. I was curious about how many and how people died. It is amazing! So many of us do stupid things in our National Parks. As missypie said. "IT IS THE WILDERNESS and not Disney". Now whenever I go to the GC I see so many people doing dangerous things. So many die just trying to get a picture to remember. Many die simply because they don't like drinking warm water while hiking. Get the book, read it and pass it on.

Funny you should mention the water. We were in Sabino Canyon in Tucson a few years ago, on a hop-on hop-off tram that took you to the top of the canyon. We picked up a woman on the way back who had been hiking down w/her husband. They had each long finished the two tiny bottles of water they had brought with them. She looked like she was suffering from heat exhaustion. Husband put her on the tram with us & continued hiking down! I always wondered how sick they both had become. It was at least 110 degrees that day, with absolutely no shady spots.

A man was just arrested--he tried to get his crying little grandaughter to get close to a mother elk with a calf (YNP, I believe), then pushed over a senior (with a cane) and hit a woman in the face when they objected, then sped off. Did he think elks were part of the petting zoo?! The little girl could have easily died.

I guess there is really only so much we can do to keep stupid people from getting themselves killed.

You are so right, and look at the abuse those people received for trying to protect the child from her own grandparent's ignorance!
