Staten Island, Statue of LIberty

I am starting a new post since the other was titled 911 museum. So, I would like to take my 7 year old grand daughter to the statue of liberty. I am thinking that we will try and reserve tickets to climb to the pedestal. NOt sure if we will do Ellis Island yet. What is the best way to go about to do the Statue of liberty and Staten island.

I would not do the Staten Island ferry if you are already going to the Statue of Liberty. I posted some info on the East River ferry on the other thread.

Get SOL pedestal tickets from the official seller as soon as you know the date you want to go, www.statuecruises.com. They can sell out. I think Ellis Island is great, but you don't have to get off at that stop.

If you don't want to visit Ellis Island, you can stay on the Statue of Liberty ferry and just continue back to Battery Park. Given wait times, you can probably do the whole trip in 3 hours, though for me Ellis Island is by far the most interesting part of a Statue of Liberty visit. You do have to reserve these tickets far in advance, even to see the pedestal. I recommend going as early in the morning as you think you can, but you must buy tickets online from the site @abram gives above.

From the SOL ferry, you have to walk about 5 minutes south and get the Staten Island Ferry, which takes about 25 minutes, then you spend whatever time you want on the island and return. It's free.

I had just read that even though Staten Island is very touristy it is fun for kids. Is this not so???

Vttraveler- which thread did you post info about the East River ferry?

The climb to the crown is a bit taxing.

Take the Staten Island ferry at night. Stand or sit on the right (starboard) side on the way to Staten Island and the left (port) side on the return. You will have to get off the ferry in Staten Island and re-enter for the return. There will be plenty of time. The SI ferry is free.

You will get a spectacular view of the Statue.

Are you referring to the Staten Island ferry? Because surely no one has ever said this about Staten Island itself, which is mostly a middle-income residential borgough (although much of my father's family is buried in a cemetery on Staten Island, which is the only reason we ever went there).

I would say that a ride on the Staten Island Ferry can be fun, especially at night when the weather is nice and you can stand outside. I'm not sure I'd say the same about the borough itself ... at least not yet, until the giant carousel and outlet mall are open. But the Yankees have a great waterfront minor league ballpark there if you can come when there's a game on. That's a lot of fun.

I wonder if the OP means Coney Island, not Staten?

No one has ever used touristy and Staten Island in the same sentence before.

As noted above, the OP must be confusing Staten and Coney Island.

Okay maybe I have confused the two. So, what do you think of Coney Island then. I have never been there.

Does your 7yr old granddaughter like carnival rides & games & cotton candy?

If so, then she'll like Coney Island.

But it's a long way away to go just to enjoy carnival rides & games & cotton candy.

It would be a 45 minute to 1 hour subway ride from midtown. It is good for second or third trip to NYC.

You are definitely going to want to purchase your Statue of Liberty tickets in advance online or if you like to live on the wild side you can show up very early to wait in line. The thing about the Statue of Liberty is that there are a limited number of tickets sold a day, there may be a line of 200 people but when the max number of tickets is sold that's it.

As far as Staten Island it is a super great idea! I always like to take the ferry as a cheap way to get out and about. It is free and I love to bring a small snack on and enjoy the ride. I have friends that make a small picnic on the ferry to enjoy during their ride.

Have a great trip, Megan from Manti Works http://mantiworks.weebly.com/
