St Pete beach or Clearwater?

Trying to choose a location for long weekend from Ohio. The goal is to say in the US & go somewhere we haven't been. So no Ft Laudersale, Miami, key west or Naples. Considering all Florida beach areas, maybe St Pete beach (Don ceSar) or Clearwater(Hyatt). Looking for some sun, a nice resort on the beach and close to a few nice restaurants. Won't rent a car unless we need to. Ideas?? Feedback?

Many years ago I hosted a meeting at the Don CeSar. It was a wonderful place and you walk right out of the hotel into the white sand!

well, I wouldn't go to those locations without a car myself, but that's up to you. I'd just want to do something other than being on a beach for two entire days, but I know some people do just like doing nothing. I just don't know if there are really that many nice restaurants you can walk to from that hotel. Most of the restaurants in that area are pretty casual things, unless you are happy just eating at that hotel, of course. Otherwise, this is the closest, about 1/2 mile

I stayed a bit north of there at the Tradewinds and would not want to have been there without a car.

I don't know when you are going, but I suspect renting a car for a couple days at TPA won't cost any more than taxis, and probably less. A taxi from TPA to those locations will cost about $65, probably, although you can use some other method, I'm sure. A car may only be about $40 a day.

Love the Don Cesar, but also love the little hamlet of Pass A Grille on the peninsula to the south and little shops along the way. Car no high cost. Dont strand yourself as lovely (but expensive) as it is.

thanks for the input. If we get a car, what other resorts near the beach would you suggest ?

Agreed, a car is pretty much a must at either destination. Public transportation ranges from awful to nonexistent in Pinellas County, and the airport is a long way from both your choices. Both areas are nice, though, and agree with aliced that Pass A Grille is really enjoyable too.

Fort DeSoto Park is also well worth going to (beaches, an old fort, etc.). John's Pass is a large collection of shops and eateries in Madeira Beach north of the Don Cesar that's fun to explore. And there are a couple attractions in downtown St. Pete, by far the best of which is the Salvador Dali Museum. There's also Sunken Gardens, the modest Museum of Fine Arts, and the tiny St. Petersburg History Museum.
