The St. Louis Zoo is large. It is one of the nicest Zoos in the Country, and it is free to get in. There are some steep walkways that can get tiresome if you are pushing a stroller for your three year old. Grant's Farm, also free, may be a better choice with a three year old. A tram takes you around the park to all animal viewing areas. After the tram you can go to the children's petting zoo. Some small children I have seen were frightened by being in contact with the animals, but that is because Mom and Dad did not go with them into the fenced area.
After the touring, go to the courtyard for refreshments. Adult beverages and soft drinks are available along with food. Tour the Clydesdale horse stables. It is an easy tour with a three year old.
I guess my answer would be Grant's Farm over the Zoo until your child is a little older.
