We stayed 5 nights at the St Francis in 1994. Small intimate rooms, "high tea" at 4 PM and the nicest people you could ask for. Close enough to the square (2 blocks) but far enough away so you don't hear the noise. Hope you enjoy your vacation

I don't really know, but I'm looking for the same
info myself for a trip before June. The St Francis
sounds good, but I saw a picture of it on some WEB
site (either www.nmhotels.com or www.placestostay.com)
and it was REALLY ugly. So ugly I couldn't stay
there; but that's just my taste, some people must
like that old-fashioned red and white look. (I'm
talking about the rooms, not the building itself).
I think it's trying to be English, too, which seems
odd in New Mexico. I'm looking for something nice at hopefully $150
or less per night near the main plaza area; Santa Fe
seems really expensive, espec. in comparison to
Albuquerque. I don't care for home-run, B&B type
places, I want a real hotel with at least a decent
restaurant but nothing sterile and very cheap.
Something romantic would be great as I'm planning a
rendezvous. Any opinions on the Hotel Plaza Real,
La Fonda, La Posada de Santa Fe or the Inn of the
Governors? These seem to be my best choices since
I can't afford the Inn of the Anasazi, etc.

I would recommend Inn of the Governors. It's walking distance to the Plaza. They have a lovely pool and outdoor restaurant, although the standard rooms are small. I've rented a private casita on Canyon Road, and that can't be beat for atmosphere and the accesibility of the art galleries. La Posada and Inn on the Alameda looked very nice as well.

I liked the St. Francis. European in style. High Tea was fun. I would stay there again. Have also stayed at the La Fonda. Very nice but I prefer St. Francis. For something more modern the Best Western was also comfortble. I forget the name of the Santa Fe Best Western but it's right in the same area as these others.
