I intend to come to an event at the new Sprint Center in Kansas City. I understand that the arena is located in the Missouri side. I have a reservation at a nearby hotel located in downtown Kansas City, Ks. I have been told that this is not particularly a safe or very nice environment. Does anyone have any input on this? I could stay a little further away in a nicer area, but would prefer to be closer to the arena. On the days I will be there the hotels closeby on the Missouri side are not available.

What's the event, Larry?
Here's a little hotel in DT:

Thanks bbqboy. looks like a nice hotel but for various reasons i am limited to a hotel I have already booked on the Kansas side, on Minnesota Ave, or at another hotel around Overland Park. The event is the Big 12 Basketball Tournament. I know the Overland Park hotel would probably be in a nicer area, but is a lot futher away. But since I probably can't (or won't want to) walk from the closer in hotel to the Sprint Center maybe it won't make that much difference. What do you think driving time would be from Overland Park.
Larry, you don't want to stay in KCK. OP is about 1/2 hour (or less) to DT, people drive it every day to work. annie
Yes. stay in Overland Park. No contest.
Definitely OP.....15-20 minute drive
Thanks for the advice everyone. I will follow it. By the way, if there any reason that I should consider a hotel close to the airport, off I29 and 112th Street, that is available to me also. But OP seems like it might be a better spot for our off time. Do you agree?
Larry, OP is just the SW suburbs. Lots of Good eats and shopping.
Maybe closer than the Airport depending on where in OP you end up, but most certainly more in tune with the Big 12 Tournament. Always party time for that week.
KC is a very large geographical area. It can take an hour to drive from one side of the metro to the other at highway speeds. You wouldn't really want to be up by the airport for the Big 12 tourney. It's just too far away, and there is really nothing to do up there. If you must choose either OP or KCK, go with the other's advice here and stay in OP.
FYI - The airport is nearly identical in distance to the Sprint center than most of Overland Park, and is certainly, under any circumstance faster than OP, due primarily to amounts of traffic. As for things to do, my best guess is that the new bar across the street from the Sprint Center (name escapes me) will be the place to be.
There are 2 new bars, with many more to come. The current open ones are McFadden's and Vinino.
Airport vs. OP, I'd still stay in OP.
