South Texas, anyone?

I have not been to South Texas since 1973... I see where the McAllen-Edinburg area has grown many fold. Grandson will be spending the summer there.

Yes, that area has grown since 1973, as has most other areas of Texas.

Do you have any specific questions or were you just giving us a heads up about your grandson's summer plans?

..grandson is a minor league baseball player and expects to be sent to Edinburg this summer. Just wondering abut the town, the vicinity, etc, as I will be taking in a weekend or two to watch some games. Nothing more specific than that.I was based in the Brownsville border area and driving daily and working with a maquillador plant in Matamoros back in '73. The Brownsville Bridge was probably the most "watched" span during that time, with a great deal of contraband/drug running across it. My car was thoroughly searched several times during the year. I visited Harlingen, McAllen, Laredo and further up the river while in the vicinity. South Padre was a very popular weekend haunt for me, also. Very pleasanr with white sand beaches. I've heard it's much more ticky-tack now.

Stu, knowing you, your car will probably be searched even if you don't cross the border. The music police will be searching for any of those cowboy songs you wrote. They will want to discourage any of us old far.s from kicking up our heels and creating a disturbance.

Larry...it took a post from me to get you out of your reverie....just wanted to get some opinions on South Texas..i know I can get many unbiased words from, you and Patti, too. Eric is enthusisastic about going to Edinburg. They average over 2,000 per game attendance...not a lot, but good for minor league teams. You know we'll be in touch. My youngest grandson who is a musician and writes his own music has already updated my "Brownsville Bridge" "classic", so it's more "today"...

First time I've been on Fodors in many months. I had a lull at the office and went on fodors for a minute. Looking forward to hearing from your grandson and to having you visit here this summer. Stay well. email me or Patty when you know more as it could be months before I am on this site again. Still busy developing hotels.
