I think we are after the main spring break crowd, but still wondering if South Padre Island is fun for families? Lodging recommendations appreciated. Would love to be on the beach, but definitely want a pool too.
South Padre Island - last week in March - OK for a family?

Most southern schools have spring break mid March but a lot of northern states don't have spring break until April so there is still the possibility the party crowd could be there.
Can't speak for lodging but you'll probably want to do the Schlitterbahn Waterpark. I haven't been to that one but have been to two other locations--lots of fun.
I actually work and live on South Padre. The last week in March will be perfect for a Family Vacation. Spring Break is pretty much a thing of the past with the exception of about 5 days in mid March called Texas Week.
There will probably be a small crowd from Kansas and a couple of other Midwestern schools but they are harmless and relegate themselves to only their hotels and a few clubs at night.
As far as lodging goes, there are plenty of options from condo rentals to hotel/motels. I would avoid the hotel/motels as they will still be charging peak season prices but doing some research into condo rentals and making them aware you are a family may net you some bargains as they would much rather rent to you than the breakers.
