thank you all.we have decided on south carolina,in late may for three wks holidays.we are travelling from orlando to south carolina,could you tell me is there anything we could see or do on our way up there.my hubby loves fishing.we are going to go to chareleston,hilton head ,the blue ridge mountains of virginiaalso thinking about cape fear.what do you think?.

Well Isobel, I am not a fisherman myself, so I won't be much help in that aspect. The Outer Banks of North Carolina might be good, but I couldn't tell you the best spot. The whole coast has lots of fishing piers. You can also pay to go out fishing on boats. Another thing to consider is spending some time in the North Carolina mountains. There are some very beautiful waterfalls in the southeastern part; some require hiking, and others are right off the road. You might also consider Savannah, Georgia. I have not been there since I was a kid, but it is similar to Charleston.

Isobel: We are just back from two weeks in Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, SC - and I can't recommend either place highly enough! So hopefully, you can pull the fishing pole from hubby's hands long enough to do a little exploring. Both cities feature marvelous, preserved historic sections. Savannah was laid out around nearly two dozen city squares or parks - 21 of which still exist. But because it was such a planned community, some of the architecture, pleasing as it is, is quite regimented (rowhouse-style). Charleston, on the other hand, is just chock-a-block with wonderful old homes and yards. We can't wait to go back! A guided walking tour in either city is a good idea. In Savannah, you really should try Mrs. Wilkes for breakfast or lunch. Traditional southern dishes (I learned I actually LIKE collards!) is served family-style at large tables, so the chat with other diners is a pleasing part of the experience. And in Charleston, try to visit Poogan's Porch. I found, in their Shrimp Po'boy (a type of sandwich, but you can't really it it like a sandwich), more shrimp on my plate than I have anywhere, any time. Delicious! Also, sample another local specialty featured at many restaurants: she-crab soup. I know England has its share of baronial homes and manors, but a visit to any of the restored homes in these two cities is also interesting and worthwhile.

I wonder what you will think of Hilton Head. Please don't make a judgement of America based on this elitist, over-developed snatch of land. We just hated it! Feel free to contact me if you'd like any other information. And I hope you'll come back here and share your post-trip impressions!
