Sonoma to Mendocino

Hi all,
I'm in the process of planning a wine country vacation. We're flying into Sonoma airport and then driving down to Mendocino. The hub and I would like to stay in Sonoma for a couple days then stay overnight somewhere along the way to Mendocino. Any recommendations on somewhere to stay along the way that's worth the stop over versus just doing a direct drive. We realize it's only a 2-3 hour drive, but we'd like to make the most of it since we're rarely in wine country. We love luxury, but we're also outdoorsy people, so camping isn't out of the question.

Thanks for your help!

I adore the Hotel Healdsburg in, ha, Healdsburg On the square, understatedly luxurious.

First -- it won't be 'down' to Mendocino -- you'll be heading north.

When you say Sonoma airport, I assume Santa Rosa. Healdsburg is right there and perfect for a night or two. Then head up to Mendocino. Agree, no need to break it up.

Mendocino is a lovely little town. We always enjoy a walk on the headlands when we go down there. Have a great time.

Don't confuse the town of Sonoma, which is about 45 minutes drive South East of Santa Rosa, and a bit further from the airport, with the county of Sonoma, which is where Healdsburg is located. Hotels in the area are quite pricey. I'd check VRBO or Air B&B for a more relaxing experience. Just remember that there are no legal short term vacation rentals within the city of Healdsburg. Plenty in the countryside surrounding Hbg. Also, the road to Mendocino is pretty but can make one quite car sick. I went there once and would never attempt to do it again. Not worth it.

I have relatives for whom Highway 1 is too twisty a drive to Mendocino, but nobody I know has claimed to become car sick driving there on Highway 128.
