Some people just aren't travelers

One of the people I work with doesn't travel much and went to Las Vegas last weekend to watch her niece compete in a dance competition. It was the first time she flew in a couple of years.

Her sister & niece had a 6 AM return flight. Her flight wasn't until later, but she went along with them, arriving at the airport at 4:15 AM.

She watched them board their plane about5:40AM nd she waited for her flight at 7:40...PM.

When she told me, I didn't know what to say.

Spending any extra amount of time at any airport is bad enough, but the LV airport makes my skin crawl so for me, extra time there would be like a living hell. I do agree, some people are just not travelers. Or too afraid to trust themselves that they can get along on their own.

She said she likes to make sure that she is on time at airports and she just people watched and napped.

This isn't an old woman. Actually one of the most fun people I work with.

Hmmm...I didn't know you worked with my Mom.

My Mom is an awesome person. But travel makes her a complete basket case. Her imagination runs away with her and she doubts her every decision.

I am related to more than several non-travelers.

My sister hates to travel so much that her husband takes the 3 boys (teen agers now, but always when they were small too) and they do drive vacations alone.

She won't go on a plane with me either.

It's not the worry about danger or complications either. She and some others, just don't feel comfortable with the unfamilar enough to enjoy themselves, I think. She is also the person who never wants to move or change jobs etc.

My dad isn't much of a traveler either, unless it is a road trip. Airplane travel just makes him really anxious. Not sure why, but it does.

He always talks about going to visit his brother, but doesn't have the time to make the drive (about 1000 miles each way). My company has an office about an hour from my uncle's house and I frequently take the 6:30 am flight from my home airport and get to that office before lunch. I tell my dad how easy it is - he could leave on a Friday morning, be to his brother's house for lunch, and then fly home on Sunday and be back for dinner. But he wont do it. Blows my mind.

It is very likely that she went broke in Las Vegas and couldn't even afford the cab ride back to the strip.

Been there, done that.

Sometimes it is really hard to be understanding when family members don't like to travel. I have to work very hard to not say anything.

My parents don't like to travel and about the only place they will go is from Arizona to California to visit me, my sister and the grandkids. They will only come if they can drive and my Dad had a fit when once I suggested they fly. Now they are in their 80's and its getting harder for them to drive. Their visits are not that frequent now and I am sure it will get to the point when I will have to fly over and drive them to California. It's not so much that they are afraid of flying, it's more they are afraid of everything involved with flying. The crowded airports, getting your luggage, security, etc.

My middle sister doesn't travel well either. I don't think she's been on a plane for 30 years and the few vacations she's taken have been driving ones. My younger sister and I wanted to start doing a sister's weekend away since we don't see our middle sister much (she also lives in Arizona). In May we did a trip to southern Arizona-Bisbee, Tombstone, etc. We knew our sister wouldn't get on a plane and come to California so we came to her. We all had a good time and want to make it an annual event so maybe we can get her on a plane in the future.

BTW my younger sister loves to travel as much as I do. Funny how families can be-parents and sister who never travel and 2 sisters who would travel all the time if they could!

In September I will be in Vegas. And I will be outside at 4:15am. And that is where the similarities end!

Wow, Keith, what a tale! Poor thing, to waste a day like that. And then you wonder why some people complain about how tough it is to travel--they make it tough on themselves! I have a relative who won't fly because "after 9/11, it's gotten impossible, so crazy, such long lines, all the security, etc. etc." But how much did he fly before 9/11? Once in 20 years. He chooses to believe all the horror stories on the news instead of listening to people who have actually flown recently and told him it's not that bad. Oh well.

My sister and I took a short trip with my aunt and her daughter once a few years ago. While at our destination, there was a brief flare-up of tempers (you know how it is with families) It was the day of our return home, and they packed up and headed to the airport, despite our reminding them that their tickets were non-changeable and non-refundable. So they sat at the airport for 10 hours or so. My sister and I went on a brief city tour, did some shopping - we were in a location which did not lack diversions - and then met them at the airport when it was time to go. They were frosty all the way back and for a long time thereafter. I asked them why they did not go and find something to do before returning home, they said they "didn't know how". I could not have said it better.

My parents aren't travelers, either. I think it's too overwhelming. My dad never lets my mom drive, so he ends up doing all of the driving. And my mom doesn't handle change well. They also aren't used to it. I think the more you travel, the better you get at it.

My dad was surprised when they traveled with me and my husband b/c he saw us take turns driving and I would follow the map while my husband drove. He said that he would be able to go more if he had a navigator, too.

I HATE to fly On the bright side, I love to travel, so I just drink like a fish on the plane, in the airport bar, before we go, etc., etc. I'm also nervous about being late to the airport, so I try to get there reasonably early - anything to keep the flying fear at bay. But 15 hours?

Oddly enough, when I'm in first class - which is more frequent these days - the fear nearly always either vanishes or lessens to a huge degree. I think I just like being pampered - or maybe it's the free wine. I'm also MUCH more comfortable in a large plane than a small one. The bumps aren't as scary.
