Snorkel in Lauderdale by the Sea?

Snorkel in Lauderdale by the Sea?
I've been reading in travel sites and brochures that Lauderdale by the Sea has very good snorkeling and diving. Searched the forums and couldn't find any info about it. Has anyone actually ever snorkeled there and if so - is it worthwhile? More interested in snorkeling rather than diving. Thanks much

I doubt that Lauderdale by the Sea has good snorkeling. The reef is further south...off Key Largo. Key Largo is where people go to snorkel. I would be very interested to find that there is snorkeling off Lauderdale. I would call the snorkeling places in the brochure and be certain before I made my plans.

There are three man-made reefs off Fort Lauderdale. The closest one to the beach is about 100 yards out and isn't much to see. The second and third are too far to swim to, so I would check with a local dive shop to see if they're conducive to snorkeling as well as scuba diving. Regardless of their answer, I can guarantee it will be nothing compared to the reefs farther south!

Ok, for those of you have snorkeled in the Virgin Islands and in the Keys how do they compare? We go to the VI's every year and really enjoy snorkeling but wonder about the quality of reefs around the Keys. Thanks again.

Mom and me took glass bottom boat to the molasses and were absolutely fascinated by the the marine life on this one reef and there are 100s if not 1000s of reef in this park. This park is notorious for it's scuba/snorkeling sites. There are many boat charters daily.

The snorkeling in the VI's is much better than anyplace in the Keys. Pollution, the huge numbers of people snorkeling off cattle boats etc. have pretty much ruined ruined the reefs off the Keys. I saw a show on PBS a while back that the experts predict the reefs in the Keys will be pretty much extinct in another 10 years. Still, the snorkeling there isn't bad and it is the only reef left in the Continental US.
