Smith Mountain Lake, Va. lakes

My husband and I (age 65) have never been to
Va. We'll be coming from overseas via Newark airport, early June, and would like to spend 2 wks. at a lake area where there is swimming and where we can also relax and also take some day trips. Any suggestions for reasonably priced cottages near a lake? Smith Mountain Lake looks fabulous. What would be some nice day trips from that ar
Any itiniery help would be appreciated.
Would it be more convenient to take a plane from Newark airport rather than drive? To what airport? What's the weather like early June? (After 2 weeks we have to be in Brooklyn for a wedding)

I highly recommend you and everyone vist the National D-Day Memorial at Bedford, Virginia. It is just about the most inspiring place I have ever been. There is great symbolism in every part of the memorial.

Bedford was chosen because that tiny town lost more than twenty men at Normandy. It makes me tear up just thinking about it.

Bedford is 27 miles from Roanoke.

I always wondered why the memorial was in Bedford.

Thomas Jefferson's house Poplar Forest is near the memorial. http://www.poplarforest.org/

(posted a little too quickly before)

Newark is quite the haul to Smith Mountain Lake. But with two weeks you could take your time on the drive down/back. Closest airport to Smith Mtn Lake is in Roanoke, Va.

Other day trip possibilities are Lexington, Va., driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, visiting Roanoke. There are also wineries in the area. http://www.virginiawines.org/

There's a state park nearby called Fairy Stone State Park. It looks interesting but I've never been.
