Must stops for me would include the Mission at San Juan Capistrano, Santa Barbara, Morro Bay, San Simeon (Heast Castle), Big Sur, Monterey, Santa Cruz.
What to do, if you like history, several of the Missions are along the route. There is a lot of wine country around Santa Barbara, Santa Maria , Santa Cruz. Of course, just the drive on Highway 1 from Cambria north is worth the trip. There's the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, redwoods in nearby parks and more.
Have stayed at Country Inn by the Sea in Oxnard, Embassy Suites in San Luis Obispo, Doubletree and West Beach Inn in Santa Barbara. Many nice motels along Moonstone Beach Drive in Cambria.

boom_boom's list is good, but it omits a cute little megalopolis between San Juan Capistrano and Santa Barbara, namely Los Angeles. There are a few things to see there. See:

if you are doing a roundtrip, then I'd suggest that you drive straight up Interstate-5 to San Francisco the first day and then drive lesiurely back down from north to south on Highway 1 on your way back, taking in Boom-Boom's suggested stops but in reverse.

It's much better to drive the coastal route from north to south because you will be on the ocean side of the road (we drive on the right hand side here).

Hi Eveyone, sorry about repeating myself kept saying reply not sent!!!!!! anyway whats it like for B&Bs,? and that little inn sounds quite nice in Oxnard, really really looking forward to the trip, we arrive in SAN DIEGO (spelt right?)on a cruise ship from Miami so looking forward to our holiday in US of A.

Why do you have to return to LA. You can drop the car in SF and fly out of there.

A couple of things you should decide first--how much time do you intend to spend in San Diego, LA or San Francisco and whether you can fly out of SF instead of LAX (or even fly to LAX from SFO) These decisions will dictate how much time you have to spend visiting places along Highway 1 (we don't call it the Pacific Coast Highway in N. California). Anyway the drive on 1 between SD and SF can be accomplished in as little as 2 days with one overnight stop or as long as you wish with overnight stops in some of the places suggested. Once you have figured out how much of the 9 days you intend to spend on the coast you can get a better idea of how to plan your trip.

bobanne, maybe you can get travel guide books for California and start to narrow down your plans with more specific ideas? If you want B&B references I have always used Karen Brown's Guides to B & B. Check her out.

With regard to San Diago, most of us knew what you meant, but didn't think it necessary or desirable to make it an issue. And if you had done a google search for San Diago, it would have brought up San Diego anyway. Try it.

In general, I think you'll find us Californians friendly and anxious to help.

I would suggest getting a GPS system, it makes driving so much easier.

Renting them can be more expensive then buying them.

I saw recently one of the companies such as Garmin or Navman was having a special that included the maps for the USA and Australia, for about $160, try JB HiFi or Dick Smith's
