ski areas around denver
Hi,
We are a father daughter duo looking to do a quick trip out to the Colorado mountains for a few days of skiing in mid December. We are looking for advice on which resort to choose. We skied Breckenridge a few years back and are deciding whether to just repeat a great trip or try something new. Both are solid intermediate skiers, on the line between blue and black runs at east coast resorts. We don't need anything fancy and are looking to keep costs low. We would like to stay somewhat close to Denver, with the possibility of skiing the final morning before a late night flight out. Ski in/out lodging would be preferred. We would take a shuttle service from the airport to the mountain so we would not have a car for the duration of our stay. We would like to be able to walk into town or have a reliable shuttle to be able to get dinner. Nightlife is not a concern, as the young one is just shy of her 21st. In short, we are looking for easy access, bang for our buck, and a few great days on the slopes. Any suggestions?

Just asking - does it have to be Colorado? Park City, Utah is 35 minutes drive from SLC airport -- it's just so easy to get to, has good skiing (Park City, Deer Valley and The Canyons, all accessible by shuttle), and a terrific "Breckenridge-like" town.

Thanks for the thought. Daughter would certainly love to see SLC as she has never been, but has already done Denver and the trip out I-70 a few times. However, availabilities on travel miles would make SLC considerably more expensive/difficult to fly to.

For easy access, any where in Summit County which includes Breckenridge, Keystone and Copper Mountain are your best options. Winter Park is not in Summit County but meets the requirement of easy access. Best bang for the buck would most likely be Copper Mt. It is a great area with the mountain being seperated by ability levels. Easy runs are on the west side, intermediate runs in the middle and advanced runs on the east side. The back side of the mountain is for advanced skiers. Copper might be a bit less expensive than others, certainly less expensive than Vail.

You are hitting it just right. We have had the best start with early snow in over a decade. You might consider staying in Frisco with easy shuttle bus service to Copper, Keystone and Breck. You best bet for reasonable ski in would be Copper. And anything along Four o'clock run would is ski in for Breck. Ski in/out is limited in both areas.

I agree with the Copper suggestion--I think it would suit your need perfectly. It's a good value, esp. for ski in/out, compared to the other resorts. Look at VRBO.com for condos. If you end up wanting a specific recommendation there ask me--we've done ski in/out there very economically and I can dig up the condo info.

We have stayed at Timber House Lodge in Winter Park and just love it--but it's not for everyone. It's been family owned for many years, breakfast, apres ski snacks, and dinner are included, they will drive you to the hill every morning and pick you up in the afternoon (although you can ski in), and we've never met more congenial fellow guests. It's a good bang for the buck, imho. They'll get you discounted lift tickets, as well.
