Gary, Skaneateles is a beautiful town, straight out of the middle of the 19th century, and Skaneateles Lake ranks as my favorite Finger Lake (you can rank Finger Lakes?); but your accommodations choices are, to stay the least, limited. There is one, count 'em -- one -- motel, the HiWay Host just outside of town; I haven't stayed there and I'm not sure I'd want to. AAA gives it one diamond, so it meets some minimum level of comfort and cleanliness. Their phone number is (315) 685-7633.

Auburn, NY, is just 12 miles away, however, and in the center of town is a five-story Holiday Inn, complete with a large, indoor pool. We've stayed there several times; it does what all Holiday Inns do -- provide a firm mattress and a clean bathroom. You can call Holiday Inn reservations or the hotel directly at (315) 253-4531.

There is a restaurant in Skaneateles called, I think, The Presidents, which claims to have served every U.S. president since John Tyler, or maybe Millard Fillmore. It draws a lot of the blue-rinse ladies set, but the food is above average for a small town.

Yes..... accomodations are few in the area. If rooms are available and budget is not an issue, try the Sherwood Inn. It's an historic inn directly across from the public park/beach in the village. Pricey but very nice - you may prefer to just have lunch or dinner there and stay elsewhere. I agree on Hi-Way Host Motel - a bit old fashioned but probably adequate. Another independent motel that is about 3 miles east of the village on Rte. 20 is the Bird's Nest. It's also an independent but from the outside appears to be very well maintained , a bit nicer than the aforementioned and has a pool. There's lots to do in that area - e-mail me direct if you need more infor on dining, activities. etc.

Try the Earll Manor B&B. It was lovely and I think they have a pool if my memory serves me right. It's located @ 986 Old Seneca Tpk., Skaneateles, NY. Very close to town and not unreasonably priced. My husband took me there for a birthday surprise 4 years ago. It was beautiful and so was the town.. Happy Trails. Melody

The restaurant mentioned in the first above response is "The Krebs". It serves family style traditional meals and the food is good although far from epicurean. The constant stream of food brought by waitresses in starched white uniforms is part of the appeal. A very old -fashioned place but worth a visit (bring your appetite!).

I grown up in the next town over from Skaneatles, Marcellus. I highly recommend eating at Doug's Fish Fry. It is a little restaurant right in downtown with the best fried fish in the area(I think). I try to go there ever time I go home. The finger Lakes area is beautiful and I'm sure you will enjoy the Sherwood Inn.
