Should we honeymoon in Kauai in October?

Hi all,

We are considering Kauai for our honeymoon in October 2009. I have read a lot of Kauai posts, but I still have a few questions and I hope you can help!

We have not been to Hawaii yet, but have been to many places in the Caribbean. We are looking for a secluded beach experience on a laid-back, natural island--it sounds like Kauai is the Hawaiian island that best fits that, but if we're overlooking another island, let us know!

We prefer to stay in boutique hotels, small resorts, or villas, rather than big hotels or big resorts. Can anyone recommend a great place to stay on Kauai? Our budget is about $400-500 night, hopefully a little less!

Are there ample opportunities for snorkeling in Kauai? We have loved our visits to the Caribbean where we could do off-shore snorkeling in calm waters. Will we be able to do that in Kauai?

Lastly, from other posts, it's hard to tell what the beach/ocean conditions will be like in October. It sounds like the water could be rougher. Could anyone please advise as to what we can expect?

Thanks in advance for your help!!
Kaitlyn

kas238, October is summer in Hawaii. The water starts to get rougher in November, as a rule.

You may find it difficult to find the type of resorts that you are used to finding in the Caribbean. Boutique hotels don't really exist on Kauai. An exception might be the new Koa Kea in Poipu. but it may be above your price range.

If you are looking for secluded, look into the north shore of Kauai. Hanalei and Haena are the two communities that appeal to me the most. There are no hotels to speak in this area. Hanalei Colony is a collection of condos in Haena on a lovely and unswimmable beach.

What we do in this area is rent homes or cottages. There are many to choose from.

NaPali Properties
Bali Hai Real Estate
Kauai Vacation Rentals
Anini Aloha

These are all reputable rental agents that have a great inventory of rentals in all price ranges.

On Kauai the general rule is that the waters on the north shore are calmer and the currents are less trouble in the summer. On the south shore, the waters are calmer in the winter months and a bit surgier in the summer, but still nice.

The answers to many of your questions and others you haven't asked yet about Kauai will be found in the book: The Ultimate Guide to Kauai (Kauai Revealed) (author: Doughty).
I highly recommend this book to anyone planning a trip to Kauai.

iamq -- Thanks for the lodging suggestions; that sounds like what we're seeking, so we'll look into those.

When you say the north shore is calmer in summer and the south shore is calmer in winter, I assume summer=June and winter=December, right? Since October falls in between, would it be sort of calm, sort of surgy in both places?

Will the water be nice and warm in October, too?

Are mosquitoes an issue on Kauai?

Thanks!
Kaitlyn
