Dear Fodorites - much enjoy the posts. Am taking a somewhat last minute trip to AZ beginning next Friday 4/28 - have business event planned in Lake LV Fri/Sat. Have made the following reservations:
Sun/Mon - Grand Canyon
Tues - Canyon De Chelly
Wed/Thurs - Sedona
Fri- Scottdale
Sat - fly back to NY from Phoenix.
Our general plans include stopping at Hoover Dam on way to GC. Hiking, etc at South Rim (not all the way down - this trip), possible half day horseback ride in Canyon De Chelly, drive through Painted Desert area, hiking, etc in Sedona.
Although I have gotten drive times from AAA, was curious about traveling from GC to Canyon de Chelly and then from there to Sedona - am I giving us enough time to enjoy the area - we don't mind driving - but don't want a "drive through" trip...
would appreciate any suggestions, especially as it seems from other posts that most people include Monument Valley and points north on their Grand Canyon trips...
thanks to all
short notice trip

Las Vegas to Grand Canyon 280 miles and about 5 hour drive.
Grand Canyon to Canyon de Chelly via Monument Valley. 311 miles about 6 1/2 hour drive. Without Monument Valley 260 miles and a little over 5 hour driving. Keep in mind that there are many scenic overlooks of the Grand Canyon as you exit the park at Desert View.
Canyon de Chelly to Sedona is 245 miles 4 1/2 hours. You can see the Painted Desert from I-40. If you want to see the Petrified Forest, you will have to take the Petrified Forest road down to Hwy 180 and then 180 into Holbrook. Add 20 miles and 1/2 to 1 hour driving time.
You are covering a lot of ground in a short time.
