short Black Hills trip report

Our family was in Rapid City for our son's soccer tournament this past weekend and had a chance to 'hit the hills' a couple of times. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Rapid--newer hotel, large rooms, very nice. Several other people we knew stayed at the nearby Best Western Ramkota and said it was newly redecorated and had a huge pool. One afternoon we went to Keystone and rode the Alpine Slides there. There's a small outdoor restaurant at the top that serves beer, soft drinks and hamburgers, etc. Sitting on the patio gives you a perfect view of Mt. Rushmore and the faces. My daughter and husband took a helicopter tour (medium price range--$50 each--for a 7-8 minute tour) (why do I want to sing '3 hour tour' right now?:-)
My husband later said that the wind was gusting at a pretty good clip and blew the helicopter a little closer to the faces than the pilot was prepared for so he grounded the copter for the day after that flight. Bummer--my son and I will just have to do the tour next time. Keystone just had a major fire downtown about 10 days ago--they're now saying it's arson. Took out part of one hotel and some retail businesses. Back in Rapid we celebrated my husband's birthday and our anniversary at Botticelli--one of our all-time favorite little restaurants. Pretty short trip report--this trip was mostly about soccer but the Hills are gorgeous this year since the area's finally had some rain.
