Shopping for Pearls- Oahu/Maui

I was hoping for some suggestions for a place to buy a black pearl pendant. We plan to do some shopping on our trip to Oahu and Maui this June and wonder where to find nice quality pearl jewelry at reasonable prices. Does anyone have any stores to recommend on either island? Any other unique souvenirs to suggest? A co-worker has already put in a Mai Tai syrup request!

I don't know what "reasonable" is, but I buy mine at Black Pearl Gallery. Here's what I didn't know--did you?--there are freshwater pearls with black/gray coloring. I'm a novice so I don't know the difference. But all jewelers that I've met (whether they sell black pearls or not) know the difference right off the bat. You need to buy black pearls with a certificate of authenticity!

Thanks for the info, I don't mind spending money on the jewelry, I just don't want to get something not that great for too much of a mark up. But I do want something nice. Where is the Black Pearl Gallery located? I guess I should study up on the different types of black pearls, I know the coloring (gray/black/greenish) can vary, but I didn't know about the freshwater type. Thanks for your reply!

There aren't many places more expensive to buy black pearls than in the high-end tourist shops in Hawaii.

Yes, there are colored freshwater pearls, and there are black "pearls" made from crushed up pearls dyed. Read more about pearls on google. Buyer beware.

There was a special on tv about this once. MelissaHI was right about the dyed pearls vs real Black Pearls. It was my understanding that there is only one true Black Pearl and that is the "Tahitian Black Pearl" because of the type of oyster it is harvested from.

With that said, I would do your research about pricing on the mainland and know exactly what you want before going. They are so beautiful and you don't have to have the highest quality for it to be magnificent for you. Also keep in mind if you ever want to buy matching pieces (earrings/rings etc).

I kinda saw this website and that is how I found out more.

Aloha,
Maui Divers Jewlery has a very nice selection of Tahitian Black Pearls. Price will be high but quality if fine.

Here's the link to Black Pearl Gallery:
http://www.e-blackpearl.com/

You shouldn't buy the first one you see, just try them on till you find the right one. Last time I shopped for black pearl pendants with a friend, we took forrrrrreeeeevvvveeeeerrrrr. But then the salesperson brought out a few more based on what my friend had been leaning toward. One of those was her perfect match, and not too expensive (from what I could see). But again, I'm not super sure what a good price really is.

What about Na Hoku ?

I saw a shop advertising them in Hanalei (Kauai) but I'm always wary of jewelry because I can barely tell a cheap diamond from a bit of glass

Na Hoku has some wonderful jewelry, including Tahitian black pearls. Most of their pieces are somewhat expensive, tho. They have several locations on Maui & I would think they probably have Oahu locations also.

A few months ago, I bought an adorable gold, mother of pearl and diamond flip-flop on a gold chain from Na Hoku in Lahaina. It was a nice place to shop with a kind staff. Whatever you do, make sure the black pearls you buy are Tahitian.

try Chinatown in Oahu. lots of shops that sell jewelry including tahitian pearls. their goods are authentic and you can bargain. you can usually knock out about 1/3 of their asking price. to give you an idea, 8-9mm of tahitian( or what some people refer to as black pearl) pearl pendant with no diamonds, and w/out necklace should cost somewhere around $150-200. i suggest you just buy the pendant and buy the gold chain in the mainland ( if you're from the US )

Carats & Karats in Kaimuki is a very reputable jewelry store. They carry a range of pearls and will let you know why some are pricier than others.

I agree with umeshupahyay. Love http://kamokapearls.com/! It's online though, not on Maui.
