shipping wine to Kentucky and Canada
We will be doing a California wine country trip this summer with our friends from Kentucky. We're from Canada. Has anyone shipped wine home to either Kentucky or Canada? I understand there are restrictions when shipping to certain states, especially those with "dry" counties. Would like to know the best way to ship our favorites home.

I am fromn the great Bluegrass State. I don't think there is a problem with shipping wine to a dry county. The dryness of a county comes from not being able to sell it...not shipping or drinking.
For example the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, TN is a dry county. They make it and ship it, but you can't sell it there

Info from Wine Institute.
Theoretically, it is a felony offense to ship wine to Kentucky. However, Kentucky law does have a provision that says that a Kentucky resident IS ALLOWED to buy wine in a location outside of Kentucky, and to ship it to his or her own private residence for his or her own personal use.
So go ahead and ship your wine home to Kentucky.
The wine institute didn't have any info I could find about shipping wine overseas. It's probably illegal, or at least dutiable, since alcohol is one of those things regulated by customs.
If you decide that you don't care, think the law is stupid, whatever. Get the winery to pack it for you. Double box it, and send it to yourself as Toiletries.

In addition, I typically check a case w/the airlines as baggage. (It is the only time I check anything). I'll then pack the 3 or 4 best bottles to carry-on. The airport personnel in SFO are used to this & you'll have no problem. Many wineries will ship to non-reciprocal states it just depends on the winery. I live in NC which has some of the most restrictive laws & still some folks will ship to us. Just ask. & as mentioned prior, you can always ship to yourself although it may not be cheap. I used to live & Louisville & don't remember having any problems getting folks to ship there.

If Canada and Kentucky can ship whiskey to anywhere in the world, then you can ship a personal bottle of wine to Canada and KY !!!
Those "dry" counties have always been wet anyway. Go for it. You have nothing to loose.

My husband and I live in Louisville,KY. It is illegal to ship from wineries. From Napa/Sonoma, We took 2 carry-on boxes of wine each on plane. My husband bought from the wineries, then went to Mailboxes Etc in Healdsburg and had it shipped to our residence. Not the cheapest way to go, either! If you are in KY, you cannot get wine online from wine clubs, etc. However, we have friends across the river in Indiana who could get our shipment and hold it. We were able to get direct shipments to Cincinnati Ohio from other wineries. See if your friends have friends there.....Ohio and Ind are right on borders.
