Bavarian Inn's the place to go. http://www.bavarianinnwv.com/
I've never stayed there. I have talked to others who have both stayed and fed there, and they were quite impressed.
And for what it's worth, there isn't much in that corner of WV.
We stayed at a Comfort Inn (Hwy 340 and Union Street). It was under $100 a night a year ago and was very new at that time. We found it almost empty the first night and a little busier with business travelers the next night. The room was fairly nice and roomy for two adults and a toddler. There isn't much to eat around there, but the drive into town is only 2-3 minutes. Shepherdstown is quite small of course. The Bavarian Inn looked nicer, but I think the prices are a bit higher.
The Bavarian Inn is probably the nicest place to stay in Sheperdstown, so it's definitely more expensive than the chains.
I had never heard of Sheperdstown until I ran into a bunch of people who went to college there. Dumb as stumps.
Defintely the Bavarian Inn! Been there many times(having grew up only 8mi away) and it is the place to stay there. It sits over the Potomac River with great rooms and the restaurant is top notch Continental and German Food. The Clarion would be another option, not as unique or quaint but new and typical chain hotel amenities.
I like the Days Inn just outside the historic area. My girlfriend and I paid $63 a night two weeks ago for a two night stay.
We go to Shepherdstown from DC for the Contemporary American Theater Festival in July. There are 4 plays performed at venues within Shepherd College. The Festival really is a lot of fun and you get to see some very good shows. Also, the playwrights are often around and there are lectures on weekends.
Shepherdstown has some good restaurants in the historic area. The best of them is the Yellow Brick Bank, which is a great restaurant by any yardstick (but not cheap).
Shepherdstown at Festival time is a wonderful weekend out of DC!
