SFO Cruise with 7days to spend between Carmel and Wine Country

My wife and I are taking a cruise out of SFO ...we plan on flying into SFO on the 13th and head down to Carmel for 3 nights. Leaving Carmel on the Sunday the 16th...we then want to spend 2 nights in each Napa and Healdsbrg.....which would you recommend driving to Napa or Healdsbrg first? the cruise leaves on Weds the 20th from the port of SFO.

I don't think it makes any big difference which area you stay in first. I hope you already have reservations - especially for Carmel this coming weekend.

PS

Your GPS or Google or whatever might suggest that you travel up Hwy 880 & Hwy 80 to get to or from the Napa Valley. Don't. Go over the Golden Gate Bridge. 880 & 80 are perhaps the ugliest stretches of highway in the Bay Are. 80 between Vallejo & the Bay Bridge always gets the award for the "most congested" stretch of road during commute hours. Stick to Hwy 85 then Hwy 280 once you get near the south of San Jose when coming up from Carmel. 280 is the loveliest stretch of highway in the Bay Area. Take 19th Ave/Hwy 1 through San Francisco (not scenic). Also get on 280 & 85 when heading south from SF to Carmal. Don't touch 101 until 85 hits 101 well south of San Jose.

No - don't take the wine train. You can see & do much more by car.

Drive through the fabulous Alexander Valley between Calistoga & Healdsburg. From Calistoga, stay on Hwy 128 to where it dead-ends, then left through cute Jimtown (stop at the Jimtown store for coffee/lunch) & then on to Healdsburg.

Yes. Go thru the Alexander Valley while heading up to Healdsburg. (Or the reverse)You can even do a little wine tasting along the way. We did this a few weeks ago. Went up to Geyserville the down to the Dry Creek Valley. Not over run.
