SFO 2 day trip
Me and my wife are planning to stop over at SFO on our way to LA and spend 2 days. Want to see the Golden gate at sunrise and sunset, fishermans' wharf take a cable car ride and stuff.
Do i need a car to do all these? Which is the best place to stay so i can cover everything? Union square, Embarcadero or Fisherman's wharf
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Can someone also give me a 2 day itinerary?
thanks

You don't need a car in SF since the public transportation system is pretty good. If you stay near Market Street, you will have quick access to the most public transportation. FW area is closer to a lot of tourist attractions though and has plenty of access to public transportation as well, so it's pretty much a toss up as far as that goes.
Whether or not you will be able to see the GG at sunrise and sunset (or any sunrise and sunset, for that matter) will depend heavily on the weather. Fog may foil your plans. Even if there is fog though, watching the fog roll in through the golden gate is really cool.
For Cable Cars - I would suggest doing that in the morning since the lines can get very long. Also, plan to board at the ends of the lines rather than in the middle because when the cars are full, that's the only place you can board.
FW should only take a couple hours. Getting chowder in a sourdough bread bowl is a fun thing to do. Other than that, check out the sealions and the tourist shops. At Pier 39 there is an aquarium where you can go through a tunnel under a big tank which is pretty cool.
From FW you can take a boat ride out on the bay - to Alcatraz, Angel Island, Sausalito, or under the GG Bridge - whatever is interesting to you.

The SF airport is 14 miles to Fisherman's Wharf and some hotels have van's for transport. We wanted to stay at Fisherman's Wharf because we could walk to Piers 39 for clam chowder and 43 for the ferry to Alcatraz, sausalito, etc. and the cable cars to ride to Chinatown. I bid 80.00 on Priceline for the FW area and got the Radisson with a water view.(3 stars) Our rooms were clean and right across the street from Pier 39. They do advertise airport pickup but I think a cab might be just as cheap. You would have to check out prices for both.

For transfer from SFO to downtown, here's what I found (haven't made up my mind yet, though) :
- American Airport Shuttle (www.americanairport.com) => 15$ (-2$ coupon available online)
- Bay Shuttle (www.bayshuttle.com) => 14$ (-2$ coupon available online)
- Supershuttle (www.supershuttle.com) => 12.50$
