For tapas I like Bocadillos. It's good for lunch or dinner.

+ Bobadillos
Also, Andalu in the Mission.
For Thai: OSHA (a very successful restaurant with multiple branches throughout the city), we often go to the Embarcadero and Union Street branches. http://oshathai.com/4/directions.html
For Malaysian, STRAITS CAFE (Another successful restaurant with 3 branches), it's located at the top floor of the San Francisco Mall on Market and 5th.

Just ate at Straits last week and found it hit or miss with 10 dishes for 4 people. Much better food in Singapore or Malaysia.
Will Modern Asian fall into your category? E&O trading is great.

That's true with any foreign restaurant but it sure costs a lot less than flying out there. I think it's a great fusion restaurant. I am addicted to their wok pepper fired mussels, try their banana heart salad, balinese ribs or coconut curry seafood risotto.
