We have been to Arizona a few times, but always in hotels or resorts. This time we want to rent a small house in a scenic, relaxing spot in the Greater Phoenix area. We're looking for sun, nice desert views, hiking within 30 minutes, better than average dining options, and a commercial area with more character than the typical suburban sprawl. Trip is planned for the fall. We would love to hear about your favorite "snowbird nests" that meet the above criteria and why you picked them. Thank you!!

Scottsdale would be nice place in my opinion. We stayed in a motel on Camelback road.
Thanks for responding. We want to stay in a neighborhood, so if anyone has recommendations on developments that they have enjoyed while renting a house, please chime in. We are open to towns around Phoenix, as long as we are within 45 minutes of the airport. An area with lighter traffic would be a plus!
South of Mesa is another smaller airport. (Phoenix-Mesa Gateway) My parents lived for a couple of winters in Mesa. I have a couple of friends that retired from Oregon to Apache Junction.
My most recent snowbird search led me farther east to New Mexico
Apache Junction is closer to the mountain hiking you are looking for.
Thanks for the info. I will look into Apache Junction. I have been reading about Cave Creek a bit on other posts. Opinions on this area for meeting our criteria?
