Wife and I (and another couple) heading to Florida Keys in May for 8 nights. Have never previously been south of Miami. Flying into/out of Miami and renting car. Would like at least 3 nights in upscale hotel in Key West, but wondering about other locations along the way. Will satisfy our restaurant/bar needs in Key West, but wouldn't mind remaining 5 nights in beautiful, well-located (and preferably upscale) condominium/townhouse. Beachfront is a definite plus, and a pool is obligatory. Similar level hotel recommendations also (in a location other than Key West) are welcome. Any suggestions? In advance, thank you for whatever you offer. The Florida Keys are an entirely new and foreign destination for us.

The drive from Key Largo to Key West is one of the most beautiful I have ever taken....I have not stayed here but it has wonderful reviews and the location is great: http://www.keys-resort.com/ and then further on in Key West another I have not stayed in because of cost but it also has location: http://www.oceankey.com/
The TripAdvisor Key West forum is very active - you will find detailed info there.
Someone on Fodor's recommended that site to me last year, when I was planning my Florida trip, and I'm glad that they did.

We stayed here many years ago and loved it. Cooler than the cheeca lodge next door. Maybe too expensive now.
Thank you to all. These suggestions will get me started, along with a good map of the Florida Keys. David.
hello david, im sure you have your trip already booked but i have been going to the keys for 7 years now. it is so amazing and beautiful. 2 great places to stay would be the cheeca lodge or hawks cay resort. cheeca lodge i love but it is really far from key west, hawks cays is like 20 miles closer. If you wanted to saty in key west check out the hyatt or the ocean key resort. On the way down I reccomend stopping at the everglades and do a quick airboat tour of them, they are beautiful and the wild life is nonstop! hope this helped....

I've written trip reports for both attractions and food in Key West on this site. Click on my name to bring up the profile, and you can access the threads there.
Key West is not really about the beach, and if you want to spend your time relaxing on a beach, there are better places to do that than in Key West-- Key Biscayne for example.
I recently spent a couple days at the Hyatt Key West Resort on Front Street -- the center of "action" but quiet and fairly small on the water. It was lovely.
I had thought of staying at the beautiful looking Westin Resort and Marina (also on Front Street), but it was a bit too pricey. But while in Key West, I was sort of shocked when I saw that resort. You pay top dollar for a room facing the water -- but it doesn't face the water. What it does face is a giant cruise ship every day -- they come in early in the morning and stay through sunset, docking right in front of the Westin. Why on earth people would want to spend that much money to face a giant cruiseship blocking their view, I can't imagine!
NeoPatrick, the comment about your "water view" hotel room reminds me of the sort of thing real estate agents sometimes do -- they'll advertize an apartment as having a "view of the park," and then when you get there you find out you can see the park only if you crane your neck to look through a little opening between two buildings to glimpse a tiny swatch of green grass well into the distance.
In short, it's an excuse to pass off something not-so-hot as a premium experience, all the better to reap a chunk of change from the unsuspecting. At least when you're thinking about renting, you can always leave before signing anything. With the hotel room, you're usually stuck.
