seeing WHALES from south MAUI in January?

Yes, both! You'll see them from the shore, but you really should do a whale watch too. They are cheao and some are as short as two hours, which can be plenty. I like to take a sunset cruise. DH wants to sail on the America II, but I told him he has to wait until whale season. If we're going our, we may as well see some whales while we're at it. Any of the cruises you book during whale season will give you whales. It's pretty hard to not see them when they are around.

course, there's the problem that I get motion sickness. But dramamine usually works in cars and on planes. Maybe it will work on the sea...haven't ventured onto the sea in a long time!

LOL, I would be the one leaning out on the balcony!
I get sea sick but I have found that when on a boat just sitting there and looking down at the water...I get even sicker! I really would recommend good seasickness meds before you go out on the boat.
I do though, think it would be so fabulous to be out there in the water with them!

Melissajoy, we stayed in Wailea in early March this year, and we saw whales from the shoreline along the Marriott (just a few miles from the Maui Prince). They weren't real close to shore, but at certain times we could see them out towards Molokini and Ko'oholawe. Take a small pair of binoculars. I wished we'd had some, for that and other things.

Pacific Whale Foundation is always good. We also did Pride of Maui last year. We got a deal on the tickets throguh a friend who works for them, which wass a good thing, because I would not have been happy if I had paid they asking price for the cockatail cruise. The pupus were prety sparse and gone within minutes. Drinks were pretty bad too. But we got what we paid for, which was very little. lol But we saw whales.

Yes, I remember standing in the Sistine Chapel having a discussion with my husband about how we should have brought the binoculars. I should just put them in the suitcase and never take them out.

One time we were in Kiehi, kayaking along the Kamaole beaches and within a hundred yards of us a mama and a baby surfaced. It was the most thrilling thing my husband and I had ever seen. We just stayed and watched them for a few minutes. Then they swam away much to our relief. Our favorite spot on shore to watch the whales is Kam 3.

You might also try highway 30, between Ma`alaea and Lahaina, McGregor Point. Extraordinary views of the channel and nearby islands, including, perhaps, the Big Island. Distant birdseye views of whales whose splash while breeching can be seen for miles. You should also be able to see them from your lanai if you have a view of the water. Just be patient. The secret is keeping your eyes open.

My daughter and I are members of the Pacific Whale Foundation and support their cause. However, we truly believe the best whale watching in Maui is offered through Ultimate Whale Watch in Lahaina. We have taken at least twenty excursions with them over the past three years and have never been disappointed. The boat is a motorized raft that can travel quickly. When you spot whales (and you will) you are down at their level. You can see them underwater and on the surface.
