Seeing the bears in ALASKA

We are going this summer to Alaska and I'd like very much to go bear viewing, but all the prices are so exorbitant for just one day. Emerald Air and baldmountain air are more than 525/a day per person. Does anyone have any suggestions for something less expensive (other than going to the zoo!)? thank you

You didn't tell us which part of Alaska you're going to. If its SE Alaska and you're going via the Alaska Marine Highway, stop at Wrangel. They have an all day boat trip up the river for $140 per person including food and you see lots of bears up close.

If you get to Denali NP You should see bears if you take the Wildlife Tour offered by the Park Service.

There are big differences in Bears. IF you want the big salmon eating browns- then you need Emerald Air. For half size non salmon eating browns- then Denali Park is the bargain of bargains- BUT I would never go on the TOURs, and only on the SHUTTLES (2 very different ways in on the same road). My min. distance in is Eielson and always on the first bus out. Bears are most always seen by me after Polychrome Pass and on the way out before the road gets real busy. Binoculars are necessary. If cruising- August is prime for black salmon eating via floatplane from Ketchikan.

Last Aug., my wife & I took the fishing/bear watching trip on Talon Air out of Soldatna. We flew over the Cook Inlet to a calm lake caught our limit of 3 Silver Salmon in less than an hour & spent the rest of the trip watching & photographing big browns & black bears from the boat. only $520 + tip for the 2 of us. Great time!

It's not cheap either, but this past summer my husband and I stayed at Hallo Bay Bear Camp in Katmai Natl Park for 8 nights. Fabulous, unforgettable bear viewing. I'd recommend staying at least 3 nights. Check out their website. www.hallobay.com
