Sedona to Grand Canyon... what route?

We'll be spending 2 nights in Sedona and then we'll be driving to the south rim of the Grand Canyon (El Tovar). Not convinced Mapquest driving instructions are the best. Would like input on the fastest way to drive and also the most scenic way to drive and how long each route takes. Thanks!

Not a lot of choice on how to get from Sedona to the Canyon. Take I-17 to Flagstaff, then US Hiway 180 into the National Park. If you don't like driving through cities, then go west on I-40 to Exit 165, then north on Hiway 64 before you join US Hiway 180. Any other route takes more time. Also not a lot of scenery as you drive there. You COULD drive up US Hiway 89 from Flagstaff, then enter the Canyon at Desert View via Hiway 64. But you may as well start with the really good stuff before you drive to Desert View.

From Flagstagg, I recommend route #89 to #64. Good road and a view of the Painted Dessert along the horizon as you drive. This route enters GC from the east with your first viewpoint of the canyon at Dessert View.

Hi Sandyris - Just a sidenote - we did this trip last year from Sedona to the GB and it was lovely. However, I got so incredibly "car sick" that I thought that they would have to leave me on the side of the road. Our driver told us that this is quite common - so - in case anyone in your party is prone to motion sickness, maybe take something before you leave Sedona. Have a great time!

Sedona to Flagstaff: north on 89A through Oak Creek Canyon, about 30 miles with 15 miles in the canyon. From Flagstaff 180 to S. Rim, about 50 miles, fairly flat country, about half is wooded. Drive from S. Rim east and down to Cameron, return on 89 to Flagstaff and back to Sedona. It's a circle, with lots of scenery. Don't rush it. Drive carefully. Make sure you drink plenty of water.

We did this drive a few years ago. Definitely take 89A through Oak Creek Canyon and be sure to stop at the overlook at the top ... very scenic.

I prefer to enter through the eat entrance -- 89a through Oak Creek Canyon to I-17 north, I-40 east, and 89 north to 64. Usually stop for lunch at the Cameron Trading Post, about a mile north of the 64 turnoff. Have a Navajo Taco there.

Desert View is my very favorite first view of the Grand Canyon. Plus, there is never much traffic at the east entrance, 2-3 car, max.

janisj - does this mean they no longer have the tacos at the cameron trading post. I've read about them in several places and was considering stopping there (tomorrow).
