SEDONA QUESTIONS

I am in the process of planning a trip to Arizona, and after reading all the great things about Sedona, I thought that I would add it to my agenda. What are the must-dos and must-sees in this area and how many days do I need for it all.

Personally I think a couple days in sedona is plenty to get a nice feel for it. Now if you're going for the hiking or to see surrounding areas or want to thoroughly check the art galleries, will require more time. But the shopping and such is limited to a small area.
On the other hand, Sedona is a wonderful place to go and stay as a de-stress destination, to spend time at the spa, etc. Many people own second homes there to get away from life in the city.

Sedona is amazing! I stayed for 5 nights and wanted to stay longer. Definitely do a day trip to the Grand Canyon. It's not a hard drive and so scenic. You'll want to stop along the way at Oak Creek Canyon. It took me 2 hrs each way.

One must see is the top of Airport Rock. Go for sunset. Do a red rock jeep tour, and definitely do the helicopter tour.

We are just back from 3 nights in Sedona. We stayed at the Enchantment Resort (highly recommended by fellow travellers on this forum)which is one of the best locations that we have stayed at and would definitely go back there again. Food was graet especially in the main dining room. They currently have a special rate of 3 nights for the price of 2. We paid $195/night (through small luxary hotels - www.shl.com) and were upgraded to a junior suite. we would have liked to stay at least another night.
Day 1 - arrived late afternoon and settled in and walked around the area and enjoyed the environment.
Day 2 - to Grand Canyon - a little over 2 hours each way so a full day
Day 3 - hiking/touring the Oak Creek Canyon which is nice both below and above Sedona. Also visited Jasper.

If we had a day 4 we would have taken the jeep ride as already noted and probably a hot air ballon ride plus more hiking. I would have also used the tennis courts. There is an excellent Spa there which we did not use but visited.
Hope this helps.

I haven't stayed at Enchantment, and have heard that it's great, but another option to consider is the Sky Ranch Lodge, which is on Airport Mesa. Charming cottage-style buildings, lovely grounds, great location and a good value. A must-do: drive up Schnebly Hill Road! It is definitely passable in a normal vehicle--don't buy the Pink Jeep sales pitch--and a stunning experience.

We plan to visit Sedona as part of a family vacation after Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Are there things for kids (6-15) to keep occupied?

Hi All,
I've posted before about Sedona. Sedona is indeed beautiful but it depends on what you LIKE to do. The author and others are not giving much information about themselves to give me an idea whether or not they would like Sedona. For example, I am a hiker. "Must Sees" on my list were to climb all the vortexes (Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Boynton Canyon, etc)

My parents and siblings - no hiking on their part. We did a family vacation with siblings there a few years ago. There were two teenagers out of 12 people. They spent the majority of the time hiking up the vistas and mesas with us while their parents sat at the pool. There's plenty to do with kids/people IF you are "outdoorsy" kids/people. If you are not, then Sedona after a few days will become boring to you. I agree with Michelle and Kevin. I could stay in Sedona for weeks. But that's because I spent the majority of my time outdoors enjoying nature, looking at Indian burial grounds, breathing the fresh air, and mountain biking.

Note that there are some beautiful galleries also in town that you could spend a day viewing.

It's up to you as to how you like to spend your time.

Second to the comment: if you are not an outdoor type, you will not need long to drive through Sedona and marvel at the formations. Drive up Oak Creek Canyon, the scenery change is amazing. Sedona is a national mtn bike destination, so if you are fit, rent a bike and give it a try.

Another vote for the Sky Ranch Lodge,it is worth paying a little more for a room near the pool & hot tub, also the Airport Restuarant next door does great food.Ican reccomend the hiking around Oak Creek Canyon & the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired chapel is worth a visit too.

We have, over the past 6 years, stayed at Los Abrigados, the Enchantment Resort and Sky Ranch, and I would have to say Los Abrigados is by far the best in terms of location, service, price and amenities.

Enjoy!

I would agree with all the above. You should be an outdoor person to spend any time there. There are great indian ruins in Sedona that you can hike up into (can't remember the name) and also if you go up by the Grand Canyon there is the sunset volcano, wapatki indian ruins and the giant meteor crater that are all cool. The last time I was there, my 12 year old son and I took the combined jeep and horseback tour (no dinner) and had fun. You feel like your in a wild west movie. CHeck at the tourist center for information on the hiking trails. THere are more than imaginable and at all skill levels. I love Sedona!

Los Abrigados has a better location than Enchantment??
Oh yeah, right.
And downtown Wichita, Kansas is a better vacation destination than Maui.
The location of Enchantment is one of the most striking settings in the US.
Los Abrigados is simply planted in the middle of a commercial area in Sedona.

I was there over Easter and on Easter Sunday all shops were open. I completly agree. Sedona is all about hiking and outdoors. Shopping is ok but in a couple of hours you can see everything. There are a lot of great walks and hikes in the area. We climbed Cathadral rock and Bell Rock. We did the Broken Arrow trail to Chicken point....an awesome hike! It would have been better without all the pink jeeps driving all over the vegetation and up over the rocks in the area. Also the devil's bridge hike is worth a look too.
