Sedona - Jeep Tours

My wife and I, middle age (but in good shape) are planning on going to Sedona late fall for the first time. We will take a jeep tour but are unsure as to which tour and company. Can you give me some information as to the sights I should not miss and which tours are the ones I should focus on. It appears that some go around Red Rocks, others go into canyons, and others go on overlooks. Also we are looking for value. It seems that the prices range from about $50 to almost $100 per person. I would rather spend less if I am going to see the same sights with any tour.

It has been 10 years since we took the Pink Jeep tour, but we loved it and it was worth every penny.

When we go to Sedona, we whip out a map and drive around the backroads where we get great views. Doing this, we see a lot of Pink Jeeps.

The jeep tour we took one year didn't go anyplace we haven't gone in a car and it included such nonsensical patter as "Guess which mountain the Indians named Snoopy?".

Last time we were there, we had a 4-wheel drive. Stopped at visitor center and asked questions. Therefore, were not rushed from point to point..
Actually only needed a high clearance at that time

Why not just rent a 4-wheel drive?

I can't imagine a car going the places we went on the Pink Jeep tour.

I also enjoyed the trolley tour in town. We took the one that takes you up to the cathedral. Sometimes hard to find parking there but the trolley will drop you off at the door.

Pink Jeep. 15 years later, my kids still remember it. It wasn't childish or boring, and no way a car could have gotten up there.

My husband and older son also took a biplane ride, and enjoyed it immensely.

Another vote for the Pink Jeep tours. We did one last fall and it was great--- fun, a bit thrilling and fairly educational. I don't think an untrained driver even in a four wheel drive vehicle could go some of the places they went or do some of the more "daredevil" moves they made. Sedona is beautiful, have fun.

Most of the off road tours go into the red rocks, just to different areas. The tour guides provide a great narrative and give good information on the geography and geology of Red Rock Country, as well as climate, plant, and wildlife information.

The Pink Jeep Broken Arrow tour, the most expensive, is the best and is very worth the money.

I would rank the Red Rock Jeep Soldier Pass tour as second best and the Pink Jeep Scenic Rim tour next.

Pink Jeep does have a combo Broken Arrow / Scenic Rim tour. We took them separately, on different trips because 2 hours offroad in a jeep was enough for me.

I would recommend against taking the Pink Jeep Rattlesnake Gulch Tour. It is just a bone-jarring ride and not very scenic. It is west of Sedona and not in the red rocks.

I've been to Sedona 30 times - used to live there for 15yrs - and have done Pink Jeep tours 5 times. They are good for first timers but don't really let you explore as much as you could on your own hiking or renting your own off road vehicle.

A few year ago I discovered Red Rock Rentals. They were solid. Cost a little less than Pink Jeep last I checked and let you rent your own vehicle and give you maps of trails etc. You can literally see 10x the amount as Pink Jeep and it's more fun because you set you our pace. I'd check them out if I were you http://www.atvrentalssedona.com/

I just came back from a month in Sedona. If you're in good shape, skip the jeep tours and do some amazing hiking. I hiked the Broken Arrow trail instead of riding a jeep and loved it. Same for all the other trails I did. Most of the middle aged people I saw riding the pink jeeps looked thoroughly miserable, especially when it was raining.
