Three of us (my husband, our 22-year-od son, and I) are planning our first trip to Seattle in July, and we would like to stay in the downtown area. Would appreciate receiving recommendations for a reasonably priced hotel so we could book an adjoining room or two rooms.

I would sooooooooooooo totally recommend using PRICELINE.com to save money. IF you're booking two rooms anyway, then there is no risk relating to accommodations you'd find on Priceline.
Stay in the "downtown" core (as designated on Priceline.com)... and while you could land the Edgewater Inn, which is a bit awkward in terms of being away from the center of things... it's a nice place AND right on the water, so that might offset the randomness of not being thrust smack dab in the middle of everything.
Just about any other 4-star hotel in Seattle's "downtown" designation would be quite centrally located.
One should hope you could land something for a base bid per room of $75-85 per night (and possibly lower) (figure perhaps $190-200 budgeted per night, including two rooms and fees) (CAR parking can add another $30 to $40 PER NIGHT to that, FYI)
If you don't use Priceline, Homewood Suites at 1011 Pike Street, would be a good choice.
Less expensive, but not as conveniently located, is Springhill Suites at 1800 Yale Avenue.
I don't know the configuration for connecting rooms, but The Mayflower Park and the Warwick are both very nice, well located, mid-priced hotel in Seattle
People do seem to find good deals for downtown Seattle using Hotwire/Priceline, often getting the Sheraton or Westin at great rates. But I've never used it myself.
