We are staying in seattle before and after an Alaska cruise. does anyone have any hotel recommendations....we like smaller "boutique" hotels which are usually less expensive. also any highlights which we should not miss? Thanks Diane

Travel up and down "the core" during daytime hours....

If you want to be in a location convenient to sights, shopping, attractions, dining, etc. select a hotel within five or six blocks of 5th and Pine, which is the heart of the action.

In Seattle, it is downtown motels from the 1960s that tend to be less expensive--not the boutique hotels.

There are some B&Bs on Capitol Hill close to downtown. The only one I know of in downtown proper is Pensione Nichols and it's got a great location but I'm pretty sure most rooms don't have private bath. Inn at El Gaucho in Belltown is small like a B&B but likely to be closer to $200.

I hesitate a bit to recommend the Belltown Inn because the one room I've seen there was miniscule in size and the corner it's on can be a bit urban, shall we say...but depending on what you're used to and what you expect, it might be ok. It should be in the low $100s.

Try Hotel Max or Andra just to see. In lower Queen Anne is The Mediterranean Inn and it's affordable and clean and a very short bus ride to downtown/First Ave, the Market, etc. Last I checked it was a better value than The Hampton Inn. Do check the Inn at El Gaucho just to see, it is worth a look.The Mayflower Park Hotel is a boutique hotel, very nice. The Warwick might be worth a look too. There's a Hilton Homewood Suites on Pike and one on Western/Elliott that might be affordable. There's a Red Lion right in the middle of everything which is a great walking location to all of it. Those three aren't smaller though. Good luck.

Without knowing your dates, it's a total crapshoot. Hotels change their rates depending on load factors, events, conventions, etc.

On Capitol Hill I say The Gaslight. We have stayed there several times and really liked it. The bus is easily taken from there.

The only true "B&B" downtown is Pensione Nichols on 1st Avenue.

Depending on your definition of "boutique" you can look at: Mayflower Park, Warwick, Ace Hotel, Hotel Andra, or Hotel Max.

For B&B's on Capitol Hill (a lovely residential area just 2-3 miles from downtown) you can look at: www.sbmansion.com, Bacon Mansion, Gaslight Inn, Salisbury House, or Foxglove.

We just spent the weekend at the Fairmont Olympic and loved it. Don't miss Pike Place Market and going up to the Space Needle at night was really cool, beautiful city lights! We enjoyed meals at Etta's, the Georgian Room, Union and Cafe Campagne for breakfast yesterday. Enjoy Seattle! ***kim***

thanks everyone...am currently trying price line...will look up the star ratings of those hotels mentioned and try to bit on one of those. our dates are june 24-26 and july 3-6. any feelings about day trips? are there any good tour companies or should we rent a car.

Where do you want to go? If it's just see Mt Rainier or go over to Snoqualmie Falls you can take a tour bus. If you want to go drive around the Olympic National Park peninsula or head over east of The Cascades (mountains) or whatever, then you might want a rental car.

Back to the hotels. i made a reservation at the mediterranian In in Queen an - $90. per nite. any feelings about this hotel? I am also still thinking about price line for a 3 star maybe 70 per nite?

You started this thread asking about "Boutique" hotels. Well, the Mediterranean Inn may be a decent place to stay, but "Boutique" it isn't!

Sure the Mediterranean Hotel is very nice. I've had friends stay there. It's up on lower Queen Anne hill, not in downtown Seattle proper. $90 for a room in Seattle is about as good as it gets. But I agree, there's nothing "boutique" about that hotel.

ok boutique may have been the wrong term. i meant smaller, non-big chain hotel...a place with some personality....
