Hi,
For anyone who has taken the ferry from Lewes, Delaware to Cape May, New Jersey: I have been on the ocean before and gotten nauseous. The last time I went I took ginger and wore wrist bands, and I was okay. I just want to know how bad is the ferry ride, as far as the motion is concerned? Any other suggestions for how to combat motion sickness? Where to be on the boat to help alleviate this problem?
Thanks
Seasick on Ferry from Lewes, Delaware to Cape May, NJ?

I've ridden the ferry and did not get seasick. I HAVE gotten seasick in the past, but I don't think the ferry ride was long enough nor was the water rough enough to cause a problem.
Chris,
Sounds like a flip answer.. but it depends on the water conditions.
I get sick very easily. A patch from my Dr. works very, very well.
I took the ferry twice. Both times before the patch. Although it was a calm ride, I still felt "it" - and found sitting in the middle of the boat was the best. The 'problem' with the ferry is there isn't anything to do.. Unlike a fishing trip where you can forget about feeling sick, you can't really do anything on the ferry....
Simon,
What is "the patch"? Also, at the website for the ferry it looks like there are things to do.
Chris
My son gets motion sick in cars and on ships. Last time we took a ferry, we gave him Benadryl and kept him on deck in the fresh air. Concentrating on the horizon helps also.
The patch is a small round patch about the size of a penny (give/take) that you stick behind your ear.
I used to use Dramamine with so-so success. Dramamine made me VERY sleepy to the point I always crashed afterwords. [I could not drive without taking a nap]
The patch need a DR.s prescription
Didn't see you had 2 threads going.
I repeat: This ferry is really not a problem. I get seriously seasick (even in elevators) and have been on this one a couple of times with no problem. Skip the medication (unless it's a gale and 4' waves in a storm) because you'll feel worse from it than from the crossing. Just stay on deck. It's really pretty easy, I promise.
I'll have to disagree with the last comment. Although it may not be very rough, I just need to stand on a docked boat to begin feeling that 'feeling'. It doesn't take much for me..
The patch had no side effects, for me, with the exception that I forgot to take it off!!!
My partner, on the other hand, has no problems on any boat in any conditions.
Yet another opinion on the patch. I get easily seasick (though did not have a problem on the Lewes/Cape May Ferry a couple years ago) and have tried the patch. I could not see (everything became blurry) and could not sleep. Bad combination because I couldn't read during the wee hours! I understand these are side effects, but not common. Bonine (a non-drowsy form of Dramamine) is available over the counter at pharmacies and I've used it for me, teenage daughter and niece with great success on cruises. For lots of info on sea-sickness remedies check the cruise forum of Fodors.
