So I just found out that next weekend, the 20th-22,when I will be in the Carmel area, there's the sea otter bike event. It sounds like a huge deal. Will my weekend be ruined by all the crowds? I was really looking forward to a relaxing weekend and now it looks like the whole area will be a mob scene. Any comments from firsthand experience?
Sea otter classic the weekend I'll be in the area- ack!

You will not have any problems. These are mountain bike races that take place on the old Fort Ord property about 15 miles east of Carmel.
Won't a lot of them hit the coastal roads and 17 mile drive when they aren't racing?
There are also road bike and cyclocross races on the Laguna Seca Raceway as well as Grand Fondo (public) rides on three routes (Carmel Valley, coastal, and Ft. Ord). All events are open to a limited number of entrants.
There are lots of cyclists (and tourists) in the area on any good-weather weekend, but you'll probably see more cyclists than usual that weekend.

Those dam Sea Otters are destroying a lot of shell fish.
I have been in the area many times during this event and have never seen any noticble increase on tourists in the coastal area.

Thanks Bob and Jean. I just panicked when I first learned about the event.
