Scottsdale, Sedona, Grand Canyon

Hello Travelers,

Can you please help us. We will be going to AZ in April and would like your suggestions.

1 day / night in Scottsdale, suggestion on sites, activities, dining. (no hotel needed).

Then we want to leave early and drive to Sedona (red rocks) and spend two nights - hotel reccomendation and must sees / do's!

Then we want to drive to the Grand Canyon for three nights, hotel, restaurants, must see / do's!

Please let us know if there anything else we missed?

Then we want to drive and return to closets airport for direct/ nonstop flight back to NYC. (would that mean going back to Scottsdale?)

Suggestions on car rentals from Scottsdale

Thank You!

Bara and Eric

What is your price per night before tax in Sedona?

Use kayak to see about car rentals, but one way is going to be pricey.

And in all likelihood, your best bet to fly home will be PHX.

In Grand Canyon, unless you are planning on hiking a lot or taking pictures in all kinds of light, two nights would be plenty. Stay in the park if you can get a reservation, the nicest is el Tovar Hotel. There are also motels and cabins. The fanciest dining is in the el Tovar, but you are in a National Park, there are not a lot of options. The restaurant in Bright Angel is ok, some of the others, not so much.

In Sedona, maybe one of the Pink Jeep Tours.

In Scotsdale Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliessin West.

For the places you mention, Phoenix would be the closest airport and you probably wouldn't save time by flying into one of the tiny airports closer.

Depending on when you plan to go, you may be very late for getting lodging.

Click on Arizona into the search by state box and you will find tons of threads on things to do, places to stay, eat etc.

I would recommend a visit to the chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona is a beautiful small church that is built into the bluff. Great views.

For now, make a reservation in Tusayan for April 22-23 as a backup plan. It is outside the park so it is only a last resort if you can't get lodging inside the park.

http://grandcanyoncvb.org/tusayan-lodging/

Then keep calling to get a room at the Grand Canyon, there are always cancellations but they don't always show up online so you must call. Call every day, even twice a day and eventually you will get lucky and get a room for your dates.

Most of the lodging is run by Xanterra, their phone number is on this page:
http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/lodging/reservations/

There is one lodge at the South Rim that is run by Delaware North, you should also check with them. I can't view any availability info online, their system seems to be down so you will probably need to call them too.

You should also consider switching your Grand Canyon/Sedona dates around based on lodging availability at the Grand Canyon. For example, if you find a room at the Grand Canyon on April 19 and 20, go there and stay in Sedona on the 21st - 23rd. That would give you a better chance of getting something inside the park.

Have you tried the Yavapai Lodge at the Grand Canyon? It's in the park, but is about a half mile from the rim. The The shuttle buses stop nearby. The other GC hotels are run by Xanterra, but Yavapai is run by Delaware North, so might not show up if you search for Grand Canyon lodging. We'll be staying there for a couple of nights in mid-April. We stayed there once before -it's nothing fancy, but we thought it was perfectly adequate, and it's much better to stay inside the park if you can. I just looked, and it shows availability for the April 22 - 23 dates you mentioned. Here's their website: http://www.visitgrandcanyon.com/yavapai-lodge

In the Sedona area, you might enjoy the half day train ride through Verde Canyon, which is very scenic. They have both indoor and outdoor cars on the train. Here's their web site: http://verdecanyonrr.com

We'll be staying at the Sky Ranch Lodge in Sedona; we've stayed there before, as well. It's a nice motel on top of Airport Mesa, with great views, and is reasonably priced, so check it out. Here's their web site: http://www.skyranchlodge.com

The restaurant at the little airport down the road from there is a great place for breakfast. Enjoy your trip!

There's a pretty big range in temps. Grand Canyon average high/low is 60/32 in April. Scottsdale average high/low is 81/56. Sedona will be in the middle of those two. If the temps are a bit higher or lower, you could be looking at a range from 85-90 for a high in Scottsdale and a low at the South Rim in the 20s. You'll need to pack some layers to deal with that.

I just took this same trip two weeks ago and enjoyed lunch at Javelina Mexican Cantina in Sedona. Be prepared for a 60 minute wait for a table at dinner if you go to the Bright Angel Lodge restaurant at the Grand Canyon. We used the Hotel Tonight app to get a same day room at Cooperwynd Resort outside of Scottsdale for our last night. It was very nice for a last, relaxing night of the trip, great pool, room and restaurant, for an amazing price using the app.
