Scenic route from Sheffield to Easton, NJ?
What would be the best route from the Berkshire Hills to Easton? We need to go on a fairly direct route and wondered if the Delaware gap offers tourist possibilities - short hikes and a place to stay. What is Harriman SP like? Would we be able to travel from Bridgeport to Long Island by ferry, with a car and explore east of NY? Long Island looks rather urban so where are the most scenic bits? We shall be there mid June.

The most direct route is take Rt 23 over to the Taconic, to I-84W to I-87/NYS Thruway S to exit 15/I287, then take I-78 straight to Easton.
Harriman SP is a good one-day get away destination if you live in NYC, but not something I'd consider worth stopping by on your journey. It caters to easy access day trippers from the city. There are a few pretty lakes and plenty of hiking trails, but you'll also find many remnants of large weekend crowds. Broken bottles, littered plastic water bottles, etc.
If you're staying in the Berkshires (we don't call them the Berkshire Hills, usually just "the Berkshires"), they you'll have plenty of far better, cleaner, more wilderness hiking opportunities right there. Bash Bish falls is a great hiking area.
Delaware WG I consider to me mainly for water based tourism - mostly canoe trips through the stretch. There are many outfitters who offer 1/2 day or full day rentals, including transportation back to your car. I think there are also plenty of campgrounds in the area - some private, some public.
Yes, you can take the ferry from Bridgeport to Pt. Jefferson on LI. LI is suburban, not urban. The scenic bits are the southern shore along the Atlantic Ocean. If you're going to be in NJ I think a day trip or overnight from there to somewhere along the Jersey Shore is a better use of your time. You'll burn a lot of time taking the ferry, driving across LI just to see suburban NY.

I had difficulty tracing your direct route as I couldn't find the Taconic but I see that it is the 217. Would this direct route be scenic or just the quickest way from A to B?
I think you are right about the ferry; it could take a big chunk out of the day. It sounds best to spend more time in The Berkshires and then just motor down to Easton as quickly as possible. Thanks.

The East End of LI has a plethora of tings to see and do - but not as a daytrip heading from MA to NJ. You would need to say several days - and eventually getting to Jersey would be apain since you would have to drive through NYC.

The Taconic State Parkway is a N/S cars only highway in NY. It runs in NY, about 10-20 miles west of the NY/MA or NY/CT border. Rt 217 starts at the TSP near Philmont.
It's the fastest north/south route in the area - better than taking Rt 7, Rt 41, or Rt 22 a south.
You can call it (the Taconic portion) scenic since there are a few overlooks with views of the Catskills/Hudson Valley, but really it's just the fastest, most direct route.
